Unlike some other reviewers I come to this CD from the Steven Blier side. Mr. Blier teaches singers at the Juliard school of music in New York. Unlike most voice coaches Mr. Blier does not specialize in the technical aspects of singing. Rather he is known for getting his students to understand the story inside the music. What is the emotional arc that needs to be conveyed? But Mr. Haas and Mr. Blier do not share a teacher student relationship. Instead, Mr. Blier hired Mr. Haas to perform in his New York Festival of Song several years ago. They found they both shared a mutual approach to and respect for what used to be called "Standards" and is now referred to as "The Great American Song Book".

Many of the songs on this CD have been recorded dozens of times before. What most artists would do to overcome this would be to come up with a new gimmick. Mr. Haas and Mr. Blier go in the opposite direction. They have absolute confidence in their own musicianship and in the quality of the material. So what you get is a great singer (Mr. Haas) singing in the simplest and most direct manner, accompanied by a great pianist (Mr. Blier) supporting him in the simplest and most direct manner. That's it! No 101 strings. No big horn section. Not even any percussion. Just the two of them. And the results are wonderful.

The heart of this album consists of songs by Cole Porter, the Gershwin brothers, and other usual suspects. But it is bookended by works by composers I was unfamiliar with. Don't worry. They are fine exemplars. Haas and Blier even sneak in a song by Stevie Wonder. If you like great songs sung well, you are in for a wonderful hour of listening.

Wow - I know of Darius de Haas from his first Jazz CD (I love Billy Strayhorn) and my wife likes him for his Broadway recordings, but this is really a combination of them both. Not really jazz, and yet not really Broadway, but the two sensibilities have made a great combination. And the additional combination of Steven Blier and de Haas is another winner! Steven has a great touch, and very diverse - he seems to understand de Haas's varied interpretations and support and add to them, not compete as some pianists do I find. I just did an amazon search on Blier, and he seems to come from more of the classical opera world, so the fact that he does this style so well - I am impressed. Again, a great combination and one that has quickly hit my top ten!

To call out some favorite tracks - Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most; I Have A Crush On You; Good Morning Heartache; Someone To Watch Over Me; I Have Dreamed; Migratory V (a new song for me, and I love it).

This is the second album I have by Darius De Haas. I really enjoyed his first (Daydream) and recommended it to all my friends. Imagine my delight when this new recording was even better! I love it. Toward the end of the CD I was only praying each song was not the last. Fabulous songs and a wonderful voice. What could be better! It has become my favorite late holiday gift for loved ones. Just gorgeous.

I wish there had been excerpts to listen to so I could have taken a pass on this expensive CD. It isn't a kind of music that I relate to.
