Modern computers are usually made without parallel ports, because modern printers don't require them. But while USB interfaces are useful, they are serial and asynchronous. That's fine if you're doing something like printing, that doesn't care if you stop for an instant or two waiting for the next packet if it gets delayed. But If you're controlling machinery that's very sensitive to timing, a synchronous interface (like a parallel port) and a realtime kernel are the basic requirements.

Which brings us to modern CNC hardware. A CNC mill is made of heavy pieces of metal and whirling cutters moving around pushed by big motors. A synchronous feedback loop constantly tells the computer where the milling head is, and the computer has to respond to that feedback immediately and accurately to tell the mill when to change directions or where to go next. A timing drop while the mill is in motion can mean the mill cuts too far or not far enough, resulting in a flawed part. I'm using this parallel port and a realtime linux kernel to control my mill. And since I got this card (and got my mill off of the lame USB-to-parallel adapter interface), I haven't had a single timing error. I WISH I could banish other kinds of errors that easily.

So, YAY! It's the right thing, it's even cheaper than the USB-to-parallel adapter, and it fixes an expensive problem!

Here are the advantages and disadvantages.
.
.
ADVANTAGES
.
1. Manufacturer is an established company.
.
2. The company constantly updates its software drivers whenever a new Windows operating system appears.
.
3. The price is excellent.
.
4. It is one of the few parallel cards that works. Before purchasing the Rosewill RC-303, I bought competing brands and alternative devices - USB 1.0/Parallel Printer Port converter cables. They did not work. As a result, the items were returned for refund.
.
.
DISADVANTAGES
.
1. The quality of its products is mixed. . . . I purchased three parallel cards. One lasted three months and was replaced. The second lasted 1.5 years. The third is in its third year of service.

Today's computer usually has only USB ports. I have 2 large format printers have only parallel port. I searched around to find a solution. Most people said they use USB to parallel adapter to solve the problem. Also many reviews said it won't work because their drivers are not compatible with all OS. These reviews kept me from buying those USB to serial adapter. Finally I find other review said the parallel cards can solve the problem. This reminds me of those old computers also require IO card. I think this may be the solution. I am using Windows 7 ultimate. As expected, this card plug in and the OS recognized it right away. I am happy I can use my old laser printer again.

I need ECP mode for what I'm trying to connect. The built-in port died, so I was hoping this would work. No luck for me. Later I found info that if you are running DOS or NT, it can switch around and work. But XP can't do that. They blame it on how PCI cards work.

If all you need is SPP or PS/2 mode, or get lucky with PCI resource assignments you can't control, it seems like a fine card. It works, but can't do what I need from it.

Without installing any software, this worked perfectly; both serial and parallel, on linux. Have not tried this with the Windows operating system.

Worked great on an old PC used for a parallel port PC oscilloscope. Both serial ports work as well, just as one would expect. If you have a free PCI slot, and need a physical parallel port and/or RS-232 COM port, don't hesitate to buy these. This should work when USB-to-serial or USB-to-parallel connectors do not.

This works under Windows XP, by the way.
