Decent string for practice, but lacks power and complexity and a bit on the expensive side given the drawbacks.

Style Name: Medium Tension Verified Purchase

This E string has a nice mellow sound to it, and does well to tame an overly bright sounding violin. The sound is surprisingly even and clear up to 5th position, and I found the string generally fun to play. However, it lacks power for anything beyond practicing at home. Given the cost, there are better strings out there. The Pirastro Gold Label E, and the GoldBrokat E both come to mind.
As part of a set, I would spend the extra few bucks and go with the wound E if you are getting the entire Pro Arte set for a student violin meant for just basic practice. They're also very useful for smoothing over the rough sound of a cheap violin. However, you pay the price in dampened projection and a somewhat two-dimensional sound (I will add here that the Pro Arte strings sound just lovely "under ear" and to listeners nearby, but that sound doesn't make it much further than that).
If you are an advancing student and working your way up to orchestra auditions or even your first solo piece, try another E string (or another set if you're getting the whole set) with better projection. This one won't give you the power you need or the resonance and undertones to shine through in solo playing.

Nice warm sound on my violin

I've always hated my E string being so bright and loud. I've been looking for an E string that would provide a soften warmer sound. I compared this string with several other E strings and this one had the lightest tension. Now the sound from my E doesn't feel out of place any more. Actually the A string now stands out a bit, so I'm going to order the Pro Arte light tension A string and try that one also.
