The product description is a little confusing, but don't let that discourage you. The "titanium" strings are actually nylon strings. At the store where I first bought these, the description with the product said that the strings are infused with titanium particles. I cannot say whether that claim is true.

This set is intended to be tuned in the traditional E-E-A tuning of a prima balalaika. The first string is metal 0.011". The second and third strings are nylon 0.038". The first string has a ball-end. Knots must be tied in the nylon strings in order to grab hold under the balalaika pegs.

As far as I can find on the Interwebs and at the local music shops, this Roosebeck set is the only set being sold in the traditional tuning. La Bella makes a set with "folk tuning." La Bella Balalaika String Set Each of the La Bella strings are metal and of different size. Also, the La Bella have loop-ends rather than ball ends for looping around pegs. I did not like the La Bella strings. They were way too thin, fragile, and not tuned in the normal balalaika tuning. I tuned up half a step from the listed tuning, and the first La Bella string snapped (actually happened twice before I got on a full set).

Overall, the Roosebeck strings play just fine. The nylon doesn't have great tone, but once stretched properly, they stay pretty consistent. The metal string is pretty run of the mill good. IMHO, they are worth three stars for playability. However, since no one else makes a complete set, I give them four stars.

As an alternative, I would recommend experimenting with several individual strings until you find what you like.Read more ›

When it comes to finding a complete balalaika string set here in the West, it can be next to impossible. Thankfully Roosebeck is here to fill that gap!

THE PROs:

These are the truest non-Russian strings you can get for the prima balalaika. Although the packaging lists two 'titanium' strings, they are in fact nylon strings, supposedly infused with titanium particles. The third is made from average quality steel.

For all those who are accustomed to guitars (like some previous reviewers below), these two nylon strings are STANDARD when it comes to the world of balalaika. None of them should be all steel, and none of them should be all nylon. It's always been two nylon E strings and one steel A string. Because of this, Roosebeck's set has a clear advantage over La Bella's which are all steel and (in my opinion) throws off the dull, 'folky' sound of the balalaika.

THE CONs:

The E strings are not the correct gauge. The packaging lists .810mm where as most Russian sets are around .90-1.00mm thick. They will also need to have loops tied into them to grab onto the your pins. Another downside is the A string has a ball end instead of a loop end which may cause some trouble with some models.

All in all, I feel Roosebeck's balalaika string set are the best you can get outside Eastern Europe. Although you'll have to give and take on some features, they should definitely be considered first before buying La Bella's set.

Folks, keep in mind that 2 out of 3 strings in this set are made of nylon, which allegedly contains titanium particles - but they look, feel and sound like nylon strings. The 3rd string is made of steel.
If you feel this combination is ok, then buy it.
Also, there are no loops at the tips of the strings, which is bad, too.
Had to return it. The seller would not refund the shipping costs, but Amazon resolved it - thank you, Amazon.
