3-1/2 stars, really. It's almost a great product, but considering the relatively high price it's disappointing that Boss cut corners and didn't get some of the details right.

The good stuff about the RC-3 is obvious and easy to find online--it loops, has lots of memory and I/O, is easy to use, and is excellent for practicing and song writing--so I'm focusing on the less obvious bad stuff:

- Various online sources, including, until recently, the Boss and Roland websites, claim you can specify tempo incrementally. Unfortunately this is not true. There is no tempo display and it's tap tempo only, which is a ridiculous pain in the neck and @#$%*& me off, especially because it was one of the few things I was careful to check on the Boss site. At the very least one should be able to fine tune the tempo in 1 BPM increments with the increase/decrease buttons, even if the tempo isn't also displayed, but you can't even do that. And no, you can't use the pedal to tap in the tempo--you have to get down on the floor and use the dinky little button.

- The drum beat and tempo reset to their defaults if you change the phrase number. Sorry, but that is plain dumb--it means you can't record several versions of the same thing, or different parts of a song, without re-setting the beat and tempo. BUT, as noted above, you can't set the @#$%^&* tempo numerically, so it's impossible to get the same @#$%^&* tempo. Great. (Please tell me I'm wrong on this.)

- The 16-bit recording has somewhat cheesy sound which is not acceptable these days--we're not in the digital stone age anymore. Boss probably wanted to increase the recording time (the promo video brags on about it), but it's not worth the sacrifice of sound quality.

UPDATE 9/1/14:
Two of the issues discussed below were fixed by Boss. The latency when switching from phrase to phrase was eliminated by a firmware update, and the labor part of the warrantee was upped from 90 days to a healthier 2 years.

With those improvements in mind I have changed my rating from three stars to four stars, although I am still not wildly excited about the RC-3. I am currently using it with a Zoom G3X, which can compensate for some of the RC-3's shortcomings. The G3X allows you to dial in a tempo, and it has 40 high quality drum beats (still not enough AFAIC). I've ended up using the RC-3 simply to record and loop what comes off the G3X and have dispensed altogether with the RC-3's inadequate rhythm features. The G3X also has a simple looper that is very convenient and useful when you want to try something out quickly without messing with the RC-3.

I had wanted a looping pedal for quite some time. my music store had this model in stock so I bought it. I found it really easy to use straight out of the box. Obviously you do need to read over the directions but it wasn't as complicated as I thought it might be. its just so much fun to be able record a rhythm and then improvise over that. It really has opened up so many possibilities for me as a musician. I find the quality of playback to be really good too so it pretty much will sound exactly like what you recorded. the only con I would say is that you have to stomp the pedal twice to stop the loop. I just find it hard to get the timing right to hit the pedal twice and say continue playing live. but overall I am extremely happy with this!

I have read a lot of the reviews on this item. I also read that the pedal has some noise to it. I am not sure if noise is the best way to describe it. I am simply running a guitar in and then out to an amplifier. The sound that comes out is a litter "muddier" than the clean sound going in. Its livable for me since I use it to generate ideas. If I like an idea and can run with it, I always record it on a computer with better software. But this works, and the learning curve is very reasonable. I do think that a pedal should come with an adapter, so read the product description carefully. If you read a lot of them, you may assume that one comes with it. This one does not. If you leave a battery inside over night, its gone by morning. Its not suppose to do that and I have everything unplugged, but that is what THIS one does. No big deal since I bought a power cord for it. Still it would be nice if it came with it. Its kind of like software companies don't give you printed manuals anymore, some genius thinks this is a good idea. I would buy more Boss stuff though, I have had tons of pedals in the past and I will keep coming back.
