I'm a big fan of New York City, Fania-produced-or-influenced salsa. So when I saw this, it was like ... Salsa from Chicago? No way!

But then again, maybe being marginalized as much as Puerto Ricans were in Chicago makes you that much harder. It sure feels like it on many of these tight tunes with wonderful arrangements and complex chord progressions. How does it sound? It's a little cooler than NY Salsa, think "Dave Brubeck" as opposed to "Charlie Parker". The guitars are a little more front-and-center and funkier. Highlights for me are Justicia's "Las Frutas Del Pais" and Juventud Tipica '78's "Afro Theme" which amazingly rocks without a bass or drum kit. And there's also some Bossa Nova-influenced tunes. As you expect from Numero, the liner notes are colorful, beautifully written, meticulously researched. They're like The Criterion Collection of music.

It's Numero Group's MO to find quirky, out-of-the-way corners of music that make your jaw drop. They don't disappoint here. If you're used to their funk and soul compilations, you might find this a gateway drug to the incredibly rich history of 70's Latin American music.

Format: Vinyl
I received this album in vinyl format (from another source not being Amazon), recently.

Pros:
1. 15 tracks of salsa music (with heavy experimental mixes of jibaro music, jazz, soul, samba, etc. in many instances). Well, one track is actually an excerpt of a radio announcement for Ebirac records (Ebirac was the actual recording house producing these tracks (akin to Fania)).
2. In vinyl format, the included booklet looks nice, containing nice resolution, extensive liner notes (with some, in my opinion, minor mistakes about Puerto Rican music), and a lot of reproduced photos/postcards/posters from Puerto Ricans in Chicago at that time, being either fans of the music or the actual members of the orchestras.
3. The vinyl itself is pristine. Nice quality. Not too thin, neither too heavy. Very little surface noise seems to be produced by the vinyl itself. The noise is mostly original tape hiss from the masters (or at least sounds like that).
4. The covers for the (only?) 4 LPs that Ebirac produced are reproduced. They serve as front/back covers for the two LPs.
5. Bwana Tambula. This is a song by Orq. La Justica, that, seemingly, was only released as a single. (I do not know which song was used as side B). Anyway, after the first listening to the whole set, I quickly went back to this song and played it like 5 more times, because it is a wonderful "guaguanco", with a lot of raw energy and power, and nice and different melodic changes. If you know salsa dura, and know the song "Pa' Lante" of Orq. Zodiac, this is is the same vein. My other favorite song, also by La Justicia, is Guaguanco Coroco, from the album "Salsa con Nostalgia" (track 1 in the original album).

As a salsa fan all my life had no idea of the Ebirac label and Salsa music in the city of Chicago. Not only excellent music but a collectors item

This is a great compilation of some old school salsa sounds - Chicago style. Try listening with headphones. The tracks are engineered and mixed really well with great instrument placement. The song arrangements are lush with rhythm, chord colors and soloing. Vocals are great too. Highly recommended.
