I'm convinced the cable is a solid product. (No comment on included driver disk... not required for Windows 7, and other recent operating systems)

Wondering if this cable will work for you? I recommend following the first 8 steps below.
If your printer driver is listed in step 8, I suspect your chances of this cable working for you is near 100%

I struggled for a week to get this working. Here's the rub I encountered:
I'm using a very old printer (HP Laserjet iip). When I tried to "add a printer" via the "Devices & Printer" dialog, the HP laserjet iip driver was not listed. I tried using the "Windows Update" option referred to on reviews here, and on countless other forums to no avail, because they fail to mention a key point.
Here's the "key point": In order to update the list of printer drivers via "windows update", you must have selected the LPT1 printer port.... EVEN IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT HAVE A PARALLEL LPT1 PRINTER PORT.
So here's my attempt to explain the steps necessary to get this cable to work on Windows 7 64bit OS, using an old printer not natively listed in Win7 printer driver list:

First, update printer driver list & install your printer driver:
1- Select "Start"
2- Select "Devices & Printers"
3- Select "Add a printer" (near top of dialog)
4- Select "Add a local Printer"
5- Select "Use an existing port: LPT1 (Printer Port) - EVEN OF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS PORT
6- Select "Next"
7- Select "Windows Update" (may take a while...

I bought this to go on an older HP laser printer when I bought a new computer that didn't have a parallel printer port, but after trying a name brand USB to Parallel cable it didn't work. I was scratching my brain when the "better" cable failed so I searched the internet for answers as to how to get my older printer to work with my newer computer. What I discovered was my particular printer will not respond with better cables but with generic cables it would? I really like my printer and didn't want to throw out a perfectly good high quality laser printer just because it was 15 years old, so I thought what the heck I"ll try the generic cable and if it doesn't work send it back...the darn thing worked! I don't understand why a generic cable worked when a name brand wouldn't, but it works so I don't care!!

The product is exceptional. I upgraded my PC and Windows XP Operating System plus Microsoft Office 2003 to Windows 7 and Office 2010 to solve an Excel crash problem caused by exceeding "Excel's Format Limit"; however, computers no longer have a "Parallel Input/output Connection", only USB 1, 2, & 3 plus others but no "Parallel Port". Windows 7 does not include a "Driver" for using a USB 2.0 to IEEE-1284 Parallel Printer Adapter Cable; nor does HP provide such a "Driver". I have been using this product (and the included "Driver") for months now and it works flawlessly. Read the instructions included on the CD to learn how to install both the "Cable" and "Driver" correctly. There is a "Specific Sequence" for "Installing the Cable", "Turning the Parallel Port Device ON", and "Installing the Driver". This product includes multiple "Drivers" for different applications; so read the instructions and your "Parallel Port Device" will work again with Windows 7. If you need this for Windows 8 then call the manufacturer to confirm if they have a "Down-Loadable Driver for Windows 8" given you purchase this cable and included "Drivers".

This cable works as advertised if you install it in the correct order. You have to plug the cable into the USB port without the printer attached first. This allows Windows 7 to detect the cable and assign the drivers properly. Once the cable is fully recognized, then you can plug in the printer.

I rebooted my PC just to be on the safe side before plugging in the HP Laserjet printer I had. Once you plug in the printer, you have to assign it to the USB Printer port on the list as that is the new driver from the cable setup. Don't select the Parallel Port and you should be fine. If you need to load the Laserjet's printer driver separately, you can do that, but just select the USB Printer as the local port.

Once that is done, it works great and allows you to keep that older parallel printer around with the newer laptops and desktops. My setup was running an HP laptop with Windows 7 64Bit operating system.

If the setup was truly plug and play, I would have given it 5 stars. But it wasn't too tough to figure out as many of the other reviewers experienced something similar.
