Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them how much I spent on a quality set of optics, but these Leupold Cascades are worth every penny.

Several years ago, I purchased a set of refurbished Cascades 8x42 bino's on sale for about $200. 3 weeks ago, when I went to twist out the right-side eye-cup, it broke off. I e-mailed Leupold support through their website, explaining that I had no receipt, and couldn't even remember where I bought them. They told me to simply send them in, and they would take care of it.

A week or so later, I got a post-card confirming that they received the binoculars. Yesterday, UPS stops by and hands me a package. Inside was a brand new, retail packaged set of these newer-model binoculars! I had always heard that their customer service is second to none - now I'm a true believer.

This model seems a bit more refined than my old ones. Better fit & finish. Optics seem a bit clearer, and don't have the discolored (pink-ish) ring at the peripheral edges, like the old ones.

It included a nice neoprene strap that will probably go unused, since I prefer a harness. It also comes with rubber flip-away lens covers - like the Butler Creek ones, but a much simpler (cheaper) design.

I'm not sure if the bino's i received were a "refurbished" or returned item that the vendor "adorama camera" unscrupulously sold me as new, or if this is really how these come from leupold, but the camo finish on my binos is pretty poor. There are lots of places where the camo print didnt cover evenly and has white "holes" that were poorly painted over with a brown paint. On top of that there were visible scratches in the relatively rugged camo coating, reinforcing my opinion that these were used or refurbished.

the case is simple and fits well, but it would be nice if it had a belt loop or some method of attaching it on the back.

I've 3 pair of binoculars and a spotting scope. This Leupold instantly became my favorite. It's fairly light weight, and the optics are very nice. The strap is comfortable. The case is soft and does not offer a lot of protection, but if you're going to expose your optics to harsh use you should probably consider getting something like a Pelican case instead of relying upon the default case for your binoculars.

The Cascades were recommended by a friend. I was impressed with them right out of the box...good solid construction and clear optics. They were easy to adjust and fit well. They perform really well in low-light conditions. The size is perfect to carry around all day. I would definitely recommend them to others.
