I compared the following fabric shears, listed in order of how well I liked them:

6. The "Gingher G-8 8-Inch Knife-Edge Dressmaker's Shears" (...)

I bought all the Ginghers on Amazon, and all the Kais from their web site (Amazon doesn't sell them). I evaluated them by cutting eight 4" long layered sheets of lightweight cotton fabric at once. My criteria were:

- smoothness of cutting
- was the edge straight, or did it wave?
- comfort of scissors (hand position, weight, tightness of grip)
- how often did I have to open the scissors to cut the 4" fabric?

With all 8" shears I had to open them too often, resulting in more effort needed to get a straight cut. With all 12" shears I had to open them too wide, which was difficult even with my very large hands. I thus settled on a 10" pair.

The Ginghers are all excellent -- better than anyt of those colored-handle shears I've tried. They are rumored to last 25 years, and they're not that expensive ($25). Of those, the tailoring shears were ever-so-slightly smoother than the dressmaker shears. Not sure why.

But the Kais 7000 series were simply better.Read more ›

Ordered the 12" over the 8" thinking the extra length would be in the blade not the handle. These sheers are almost comically large all around. On my food scale they weigh just over 1.5lb and would leave Edward Scissorhands drooling over the size and quality. Despite them being not at all what I expected I am not disappointed. My intent was to use them for some auto upholstery work cutting heavy fabric and carpet. Then once that job was finished I planned on using them as general purpose scissors around the house. They will work better then expected in the garage but will not be moved inside after the job is done (just way to big). If I could go back I would order the 10" or 8" versions; but, I'm still giving them 5 stars because it's not their fault I assumed to much when ordering. The description is accurate and the product is great.

Ordered from amazon 05/2014 and were labeled Italy. The place of manufacturing does not state the quality of the product.

great shears except a very sharp piece from the grinding on the top. Checked out these shears at a fabric shop ( they had six ) all had the same sharp ending. For Ginger shears I was surprised that quality control has not picked up this flaw.

My favorite scissors are Gingher and Kai, I have just about all the models available except recently I purchased the Gingher 12" Knife Edge Bent Trimmers and expected them to have been made in Italy...WRONG ! ... sticker on the scissors said: "Made in Mex" and cheap packaging too. I paid over $44.00 for these scissors and feel betrayed.

Perfect sharp shears. I use these for saddle leather, and they cut like butter. The Knife edge is a cinch to keep keen. Pun intended.
