I have raised small animals for along time. I also used to manage a pet store. Pine is the most dangerous substrate for small animals. The dust causes respiratory problems, that causes your animals to cough up and sneeze blood. I have found in the animals that I have rescued that have this ailment seem to get better when I switch them over to Carefresh bedding. I HIGHLY recommend using it, it also highly reduced the odor that it caused by urine. The other benefits are: you little friend will be more comfortable sleeping on something soft, and it is much easier to clean!

I got a sample of Carefresh Colors from the petstore when I bought the Hamster cage kit and loved it. I've owned guinea pigs, rats and hamsters before but had never used Carefresh Colors. I was impressed with its softness and its ability to absorb fluids and odors.

It was time for me to buy some more bedding and I thought Carefresh was pretty much the same as Carefresh Colors, except that Carefresh was less colorful. Out of the bag, I was a little disappointed, because the bedding was not as soft and fluffy as Carefresh Colors. It has more the texture of something I might expect if maybe I wet a bunch of newspaper, wadded it up, let it dry and then shredded what was left. It's rough and dry.

My hamsters don't seem to mind the change. They shred the Carefresh to make it fluffier for the little corner they like to burrow in. It's just as absorbent as the Carefresh Colors and controls odors just as well. The cage smells nice and fresh. Although it's not as pretty as Carefresh Colors, there is an advantage to it being a drab grey, the feces don't show.

If softness and bright color is important to you and your small pet, get Carefresh Colors. If hiding the feces is more important, regular Carefresh is best. If you are looking for absorbance and odor control, they both work equally well.

UPDATE: It seems the quality of the bedding varies greatly from lot to lot. My second batch of this stuff is lighter in color and not as rough, although it's still rougher than the Carefresh Colors.

Our healthy hamster became lethargic the week I changed his litter to this. He died two weeks later. I had always used the same litter until I ordered this instead of making a trip to the store. Big mistake!

A few times, I'd get a good batch, but the majority of the time, it smells strongly like chemicals, and was extremely dusty. Pigs and other small critters have sensitive respiratory issues, and the smell and dust were enough to irritate mine!

I've switched to using (their own special) towels and fleece. I kinda think it's easier anyway than shoveling all the liner and wiping all the dust behind. If Carefresh could get their quality consistent, I'd buy some to keep over by their hay box, but I don't want to smell that chemical smell or that dust in my home!

Although this product is expensive it works. I have 2 rabbits, after I got them litter box trained I thought the powerful smell of thier urine would go away. It didn't. I tried everything. I was so tired of living with the smell I thought of getting rid of them, which I didn't want to do. When I discovered this product their urine smell became controlled. Packaging says it is made for small animals. It is made from reclaimed products from the paper industry. It does not contain pine or cedar and is safe for buns. It is dust free, which is important in rabbits. I have used Natural, Ultra and Complete. Natural and Complete are similiar in color and weight. Ultra is white. The white color is good if you need to check for blood in your pet's urine. That's not an issue for my buns. They all have the same odor control and absorption. The only difference I have found is that Ultra is slightly softer and lighter, making it easier to track around the cage. The package says that it has 10 day odor control. I don't find this to be true. I change the wet spots in their litter boxes daily, and completely change the boxes every 3 or 4 days. I had to do this even when the buns were kept in seperate cages. The product is compressed. When you use it you can kind of fluff it up with your hands and it expands. The package I have right now of Complete, says it expands from 25.7 liters to 60 liters. Don't know that it really expands that much. It does expand, just can't say it expands to more than double of the original size. It is important that your pet not eat this product or intestinal problems and/or death may result. It absorbs well and does the best job of any product I have found to absorb odor. The product is very consistent. I know exactly what I will get when I buy it. Good quality control. I put it in the compost pile when I am done using it. I can say that this product has made my house smell better.

I love that this is made from recycled paper so it's more environmentally friendly. As well, pine and cedar bedding can cause breathing problems for small animals so paper is really the best way to go. It does a very good job of absorbing smell and fluids. I vastly prefer this over any wood shaving type of bedding. Plus my bunny likes to chew on her bedding and I know that since it's just pain paper (no dyes, no wood chips) she's safe. Because she's litter trained I only need to spot clean the cage. One bag lasts me months at a time.
