I've used Rosetta Stone and I've used instant immersion. I've used private class rooms, I've used online programs, and I've used free "listen and repeat" programs. Instant Immersion is by far the least productive and least useful. It is so poorly produced, it makes you think you stepped back into the 1980's and just turned on your Commodore 64. Its essentially little more than a collection of words, with little direction or thought put into it. Nothing has hover bubbles, so don't expect to actually know what any of the icons mean or are. And once you successfully make it into the program, there is really no set plan on what to actually do. Everything this program has to offer can essentially be found for free on hundreds of different free language learning web sites, and frankly, those sites are just as effective as this is.

I never used the prior version but its scary to know that this version is the update! This is nothing more than "listen and repeat" with some horrible 90's graphics set to it. Worth about $5. I dont currently own Rosetta Stone Chinese, nor do I work for them in any way shape or form, but having used it before, I can attest: this is no Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone is overpriced, but if you use it, you will learn a basic grasp of the language. I challenge you, to use instant immersion for more than 10 minutes and not be so turned off that you never use it again. C'mon! Take me up on that challenge! :)

Don't want to spend $500 on Rosetta Stone? and don't want to throw away $30 bucks on this garbage? Go with any of the online programs for around $100 like Rocket Chinese or Chinese Pod 101 (I don't work for them either).

I am a skeptical guy. I don't work for Rosetta Stones or Instant Immersion. I have a demo Rosetta Stones software, but I just can't seem to justify spending $500 on Chinese Mandarin softwares for my 8 year old son, so I bought Intant Immersion for about $31. My son is taking beginning Chinese Mandarin at a local school in Southern California. I just want a software so that he can practice speaking and listening Mandarin when he is at home.

Like all softwares, all stated that they work well as compliment to a language class. I don't expect anyone to buy any software and learn it solo, and be fluent with the language, esp Chinese Mandarin. I think all language softwares are like all language books; they work well as study/learning guides to the classes. It takes lots of efforts and time to learn a new language.

This product exceeded my expectation. It has a dvd disc that you can play on any dvd player. It has lots of lessons on it. In addition, it has a CD disc with some MP3 learning sessions, but we haven't test it. The one he has spent lots of time with is the DVD disc for computer. It has lots of lessons in each of 3 levels. He is playing with Level 1. This new version, as I understand it, has the microphone features (microphone not included). I connected my microphone to my PC. There are sections where you speak into the microphone so that you can playback to correct your speech.

It keeps my son interested in learning Mandarin. He is having fun with the software. Thus, I think it is well worth the $31.

A while back I was struggling to learn Chinese. I had bought myself a book, but I lacked motivation, and the pages all looked the same to me. It just wouldn't cut it for me, because it was all rote memorization. So I decided a CD was the best bet. I knew Rosetta Stone was widely acclaimed, but I did not have the funds for this. I tried a trial version of Rosetta Stone, and it was NOT beginner-orientated. I was so surprised, and was VERY glad I did not spend the hard-earned cash on something that inefficient. Another one of my friends had used this Instant Immersion for Japanese and suggested it to me, stating it was very easy to learn from. So, I decided to try it out. And sure enough, this program has gone above and beyond my expectations! It comes with around 8 Discs - Chinese Level 1, Disk 1 and 2; Chinese Level 2 Disk 1 and 2, Chinese Level 3 Disk 1 and 2; and audio recording for the ipod or in the car (VERY useful, comes with a myraid of voice lessons), and a DVD for the TV. I finished the first disc, Chinese Level 1 Disk 1 in around 3 days, I was so excited and it was actually - surprisingly enough - fun! You learn a whole bunch of words through pictures and audio and the written forms of each word, both in pinyin and in characters (so visual and aural learners are set) and then can take 2 tests - an easy one and a hard one. It also has voice comparison, so you can record your voice and compare it to the native speaker's. The other discs are set up each a little different (personally, the 1st disc is the most fun because you get to play with food, shopping, etc.) But each is very helpful. The 2nd disc covers more basic words, the 2nd discs work on a little more vocab, and the very last disc covers business.Read more ›
