Introduction

If there is one one word to describe my impression of the MEElectronics CW31 Wooden In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players (Wood) it is "surprise". Which is fitting because when I entered to get a CW31 review sample I was not expecting to be selected as I have never written an earphone review before. Nevertheless, I have a collection of several dozen earphones now and will do my best to review the CW31.

Accessories

The packaging may be the least surprising thing about the CW31. For those of you familiar with MEElectricones packaging it the same design except thicker to accommodated a new case. Speaking of which, as you might guess from the packaging, the new case is slightly thicker than the clamshell case that comes with M series earphones. This is a pleasant surprise as the rounder shape makes it more rigid than the flatter clamshell design. The case is solid black except for the glaring purple zipper which might be an eyesore to some. One other possible downside worth mentioning is that the cable wrap commonly included with MEElectronics' earphones is too big to fit in the smaller case--which might explain why the cable wrap was omitted from the CW31. Also worth noting is an improved shirt clip design. Not only pivotal for easier attachment, it can easily be removed without worry of damaging the cable--something that was a concern with older models. As far as tips go, the CW31 includes your standard small, medium, large single-flange, a small double-flange, and a small triple-flange. The single-flanges are nothing special, just your average stock tips.

Along with several cheap in-ear phones, my last serious pair of earbuds were the Monster Turbine. They sounded good with lots of bass but had an issue whereby the left side would go bad at the point where the earbud and wire connected. Monster replaced them the first time and would not return my emails or calls the second.
So, the main things I am looking for in an earbud are in no particular order:
1. No tangle cable (Five Stars)
2. Durability (Three Stars)
3. Sound "good" (Three-1/2 Stars)
4. Noise suppression (Three-1/2 Stars)

Most of the above is self explanatory but, I'll delve in to a couple of these deeper.

The no tangle cable is great. I can roll it up and it seems very durable, (the cable itself see more for connections)

Noise suppression is pretty good... Alot of this depends on how well the rubber fits *your* ears. It comes with a few different sizes. I am using the medium size that comes installed. They do have an unusual oblong shape that is interesting. Perhaps the theory is that your ear canal is not exactly round. That said, they don't seem as tight as others mediums that I have tries. I may try my foam replacements soon for more isolation but I wanted to give the stock ones a fair shake. I like them OK.

Sound- Not a ton of bass as others have commented. They do have a very pleasing flat sound that audio engineers (of which, I am one) might enjoy. Personally, I like to hear a bit more bass enhancement when I am just enjoying music. When I am mixing music, a flat speaker is a must. However, this has not stopped me from enjoying many hours of music and audio books on these earbuds.

These lasted about 6 weeks and then broke. I usually carried them in their supplied case. Sound was good though while it lasted. This is a bit of a burn for me because i dont really have the money to replace them and I need headphones to do homework :(

Truely unique earphones. The other reviewers are right, the highs are great, lows lesser so. What I appreciated is that it came not only with a very nice zipper case but also five different rubber tips to custom fit them. There is also a lapel clip which allows you to wear the phones clipped to your shirt and helps prevent those nasty, sudden jerks of the phones out of your ears by accident.

My review will mostly compare these headphones to the now discontinued CC51's which can be found for almost the same price as these.

When going back and forth between the two earbuds I find that the cc51's are much less veiled, punchier, contain better sub-bass, have a warmer quality and more high end presence, soundstage and clarity.

The cc31 do have a nice mid-range but the sound simply isn't balanced out enough for me. Another great headphone in this price range is anything by v-sonic or the hifiman RE-0 which is not fifty bucks I believe.

The sound quality certainly isn't terrible, it's just there is so much out there in the market. I do love the Meelectronics line-up though as I think for the dollar they do one of the best jobs. The sound-magic pl50 is also a great option in the inexpensive price range.

I've learned something very important about headphones that everyone should take note of. They sounds COMPLETELY different depending on the source you connect them too. They can sound absolutely terrible on your iPad (which they do) yet stellar on a 5 year old budget Acer laptop (which they do again). That being said I've listened to these on at least 5 different devices and generally they have certain qualities to them. Good bass. Not oodles of it. Not sloppy, not overly boomy and not exaggerated. They honestly leave me wanting more. They can sound loud and "tinny" depending on your source. Some people won't mind the ear piercing sound and some people will think its completely okay and normal. But they can get quite loud. They sound pretty smooth. Although made of wood they don't sounds as warm as you'd expect. They're more on the "cooler" side of the spectrum. They are quite comfortable especially because they're so small. They fit snug (even in my weird ear canals) and the rubber inserts are VERY soft so no chance of a sore ear canal. Wire is not tangle prone BUT does bend too easily meaning rather than falling flat the wire will be in loops because of tension. I HATE that. Overall they're good. I don't know how they compare because these were my first pair of headphones in years but they're not bad at all. I got them for $13 on New Years Day and that was a steal.
