I spent hours looking at different smartphone mounts before choosing this one. My bike has a cable that interferes with the handlebar stem, so that rendered any products with stem mounts out of the question. I chose this one because, (a) it covers the phone completely to protect it from rain, mud and road dust, and (b) because it is one of the best designs for holding onto your phone. The ones that rely on tension bands or springs are bound to fail - many users have experienced dropped phones firsthand. Back to the Arkon SM032...

The Good: It's got that type of zipper that looks like a good seal. I trust it to keep water out. Two interior pads of different thicknesses are included to take up unused space and force your phone against the viewing window. Even though the window is flexible, the view through it is clear while riding. It fits my 4.3-inch display perfectly and touch response through the window is fairly reliable. Because the pouch is mounted to a ball joint, you can rotate and tilt fairly freely, though it has its limits. I especially like that the mfr. added a little brass thumb screw to ensure it can't slide off the mount during a ride. That's a huge plus.

The Not-So-Good: The handlebar mount itself is quite bulky and rudimentary looking, especially if you put it on a high-end bike. Looks like something you'd buy from a department store's bike accessories aisle. Why Arkon decided to go with the two outside screws is beyond me. Most similar clamps have a single screw buried flush with the plastic. While riding on bumpy roads, the case doesn't stay secured in position, so I have to give it an occasional nudge back to its viewing angle. I've tightened the retaining nut beneath it about as far as I want to go. Don't want to break it.

well the title just about says it.

i got it for my mother to use with her LG Nitro HD android phone which has a 4.5" screen and it fits with room to spare. one thing i find inexplicable is why the space inside is so deep ? i could probably put three smartphones on top of each other in there - WHY ? they probably wanted it to be able to fit a GPS unit like Garmin, but i would rather have a slimmer case.

another reviewer said the ball and socket joint is a little loose - that's a bunch of nonsense. there is an enormous nut on the socket that tightens the socket to any degree you like. i can easily loosen it any time - readjust the orientation how i like - and then easily tighten it again without any tools. it works perfectly.

all in all surprisingly solid mount - way beyond my expectations - definitely overbuilt. size and weight is a downside.

is it really waterproof ? probably more like splash proof. i would have liked more protection against water, but it does protect well against dirt and dust.

would i recommend it ? yes, but only if you understand how huge it is.

Everything about this product shouts quality. The waterproof exterior is neatly sewn and seamed, and splits open with a beautifully installed waterproof zipper. It is sized to fit even the old model phones that were a lot fatter, or phones with heavy duty cases. No need to remove the case in order to slip your phone into its place. A selection of pads take up any extra space if you have a newer, thinner phone. The handlebar mount is sturdily built and well designed. It will have no problem surviving my mountain bike rides, and I love the swivel feature for portrait or landscape viewing.

I'm looking forward to long road bike rides with my phone in place in this mount. I can manage my Pandora music, explore new routes with my maps app, monitor my progress on RunKeeper, all without missing a pedal stroke. This products is an amazingly good deal for the price.

And I must make mention of this company's excellent customer service. I emailed an inquiry through their web site's email submittal page on the Sunday after Christmas and actually had a response within an hour, a surprisingly generous solution to my situation, and final resolution within days. I will buy from this company again and again.

Unfortunately too small for a GS3 in any kind of protective case. WAAAY to small for mine in the Seido OBEX. We could get my wife's phone (also an S3) into it, since it has a much lighter, thinner half-shell case; but unfortunately the fit was still tight enough that we couldn't get the clear plastic front to sit tight enough against the phone to reasonably use.

Also, where the edges of the clear plastic are sewn into the forward body of the case are wide enough so that you can't reach the home button without some hit and miss.

I love the concept though, holding out for a 1/2" taller version to replace what we have. The high point is, that it is big enough and deep enough to fit our 13000mah external battery and 2 usb cables in, and the clamp does fit on the handle bar of our jogging stroller. So we use it to extend our Ingress walks while keeping our hands free for phones and stroller.

Also, loosen the nut before you adjust it on it's swivel ball. I wasn't thinking about it and twisted it into position without doing so and cracked the nut all the way through on one side. It still works, cranks down tight enough, even cracked, to hold the case in the position you wanted-but it's definely a weakness in the construction. You can very easily put enough torque on it to crack the nut by accident.

So we're still getting utility out of it, just not what we'd hoped, and with a minor quibble regarding sturdiness. For the price though I can't complain too loud.
