We bought two of these for our cats - got tired of the cheap breakaway collars sold at Petco and the like. We were always finding them lying around the house after (we suspect) the two had been roughhousing, and after one went missing outside that had a rabies tag, we decided we'd had enough.

A search at all the larger stores that carry pet supplies revealed that they all carry the same ridiculously feeble collars...the clasp gives up with even the slightest pressure. OK - I understand that Fluffy MIGHT get her collar snagged on something outdoors and be unable to waddle back to her food dish for afternoon snacks, and that a strong collar COULD potentially keep her there until human assistance arrives to assuage her yowling. And if no help arrives and Fluffy suffers emotional and/or physical damage due to her being restrained by her collar, the company that retailed that collar, as well as the the company that built it, COULD suffer liability (in the eyes of an obviously impaired Judge/jury)...so stores might not want to carry sturdier collars.

I get it. So, I ordered this type of collar which so far has stayed on our cats quite well. It has an elastic band that allows the collar to stretch if extra force is applied (and if you've ever tried to walk a cat on a leash, you KNOW they can apply "extra force" if necessary). The material is a sturdy poly weave which will likely last years. The only reason this product didn't get five stars is that the elastic band is relatively frail, in my opinion, and I can see it degrading faster than the rest of the collar. The good news is: it's easy to slip a replacement elastic band in there to replace it or - better yet - put in an additional band NOW to strengthen the collar, extend its serviceable life, and still protect the wearer.

Anyhow, we don't expect to have any collar-less cats any time soon. Good product!

This is the 5th or 6th collar I have ordered for my almost one year old cat......He has managed to break off all the other ones.....This one is staying put and I, AND THE BIRDS....Love It......Quick delivery and I would recommend for those Wild creatures called rescued house cats......whom are like Houdini...

Our cat removes collars that have a plastic break free clasp just from her regular grooming. This type of safety collar with a buckle and stretch section stays on much more reliably. Adding a small wire tie over the buckle after it's on your cat makes it escape proof. After about 6 months use on our cat and the stretch safety section gets thin and it's time to replace with a fresh collar.

I find the little bell annoying but it is pretty easily removed with a couple pair of pliers to open the metal ring holding the it to the collar so I don't count it as much of a negative.

As a former vet tech and owner of four kitties who romp in our cat-fenced yard, I understand the importance of my cats wearing tags and also wearing a collar they can escape from if they ever get it caught on anything. Unfortunately, the newer "quick release/snap" types are so easily undone that we were constantly losing them during play and replacing ones lost in our bushes, etc. These buckle collars are a great medium - when not worn so tightly that the elastic stretch loop doesn't have it's purpose defeated. The only downside was this one seemed to be made of a more slippy nylon material, and it easily worked the collar loose/undid the buckle the first day twice. I was a bit discouraged but found that after about two days of being placed in the same buckle hole, the collar seemed to "settle" (or stay folded or what not) and it has been just fine ever since! This is also a lot more burnt orange than the photo, but that's ok!

This collar is strong but thin and light in weight. This is a good thing. Cats do not like bulky, heavy collars, and they are an annoyance during their fastidious grooming process. The second good thing about this collar is the safety mechanism which is basically a rubber band that will stretch if kitty gets caught on something. This is much better than the typical plastic buckle-type safety mechanism which usually opens up too easily. The charm and bell are very nice additions to the collar. However, I did remove the bell. I do not want my cat catching birds -- and thankfully he is much more of a mouser -- but I recently read somewhere that if your cat was the one being chased/hunted by a predator, the bell would give him away if he was trying to escape/hide. I had never thought about that before, but it made me a bit worried.

The bad thing about this collar is that the price nearly doubled since I purchased the first one in May. Yes, Tucker lost his collar and I had to buy another. But it lasted a couple months instead of a couple days :)

I recently had a breakaway buckle collar that broke away in one day, never to be seen again. The collar was not stretchy but the plastic push-together fastener was the break-away part. I paid about $8 for it. Prior to that my cat had a leather-like collar with a metal buckle that he wore for over a year with no problem. Then I got this collar which is stretchy material, and I believe he could squeeze out of it if the collar got caught on something. He has worn it for a few weeks, and so far it is still on him and he is just fine. It has a cute little bell and heart charm on it and the bell rings as he walks, which I hope will alert any birds he might have his eye on. Love the green color too.
