I use this radio for offroading. Super rugged, easy to use and versatile. The speaker is plenty loud inside a noisy vehicle climbing over the rocks. Seems like it has a really good battery life talk/listen duration. Works best in conjunction with a 2m/70cm external antenna instead of using the rubber duck it comes with.

Radio is great. Submersible works. Dunked it in the river and it is none worse for the wear. MUCH MUCH clearer than the bao feng previously purchased and now used as backup. External mike is ideal as waterproofing membrane does muffle sounds a bit.

Very solid construction all ports are sealed and the instruction manual is easy to read and understand. Sound quality is excellent. Just got my tech license and this was recommended as a good first radio. I can see why I think I will get a lot of use over the next several years as I work on being prepared for disaster relief in my state.

Nice radio with bulk enough to feel good in my hand. The battery lasts a long time: 21 hours after the first charge, with lots of listening and light talking. I had it on quick sleep mode. (there's an available battery holder for alkaline or Lithium AA as well). The antenna's good enough for short range; it's convenient and inefficient. (But it doesn't get warm after 5-watt use, as some antennas do. Make sure you screw the antenna in completely. I found this handheld about average to program by hand. (Have a list in front of you) The idea of the speaker-mic is good.

It's a pain to plug in only an earphone. I listen a lot more than I talk.Other handhelds have a jack near the antenna base. Because this rig is so water-resistent, (THere's only one jack, other than the antenna), Yaesu gives you two bad ways to deal with an earphone: You can buy an adapter that pulls both microphone and earphone jacks into separate leads; then plug your earphone in -- The microphone wire just flops around... and now your radio isn't water resistent), or you can buy a speaker-mic.

After you unscrew and remove the antenna (trust me on this...it's almost impossible to start the SP/MIC plug with the antenna installed) plug in your mic (you've got to screw it down beyond where I thought was good, to maintain the water resistance) plug your earphone into the bottom of the mic (that's really the only jack for an earphone), and hope you don't drop the mic OR as I do (I use announcer earsets, like you see tv reporters wear), run the earphone wire down the mic's curled cord after plugging it in, and then run the rest of the earphone wire up under the back of your shirt, and plug in the earphone. Luckily, the cords are over 6' long.

This is my first Amateur band radio, as I have been studying for my Technician License. I love it! If I was a little smarter I bet I would really enjoy it.

I like the unit but the jury is still out on its performance. I am usually on the side during local net operations. The HT seems to
drop some incoming transmissions. I am not sure if it is my operating technique or the unit. I am still working on it. I am very close to the Repeater so it is not distance.

Rugged, quality made radio. I would buy again. I have no reports of low audio due to waterproofing. Receive audio is good, too.

Good reception. Instructions are easy to use. Takes a little time to get used to all of the functions this model has because it has so many. A serious 2 meter radio that is absolutely no piece of junk. The only draw back is that there is not an actual knob or dial to adjust the squelch; that has to be done using the function buttons. Aside form that I would buy another one. Radio is solid as a rock and of course it's waterproof!
