Over the last year, I gradually acquired more and more Festool tools for my home "toolbox". They are all nice toys for grown-ups, they keep the air clean due to dust extraction benefits, and do their job really well. RAS stands on top of my list as the tool which impressed me the most. This is an incredibly aggressive, and yet easy to control sander. It uses the same principle as the Rotex in its aggressive mode (spinning sanding pad), but the sanding disk in the RAS spins about 6 times faster. Consequently, the removal rate is also at least 5-6 faster, to the level that one can shape wood (think wood sculpturing) or remove significant thickness of the material in a very short time.

Online reviews and videos emphasize scribing to the line and cutting with the edge of the disk. Before I got the tool, I thought that the little whiskers which help with dust collection make it impossible to sand large surfaces by pressing down the whole surface of the disk, flat to the work surface. This turned out to be a wrong perception. You can sand flat with this tool (e.g., sand down high spots on your subfloor) with impressive results. I tried to remove high spots with a Rotex and/or belt sander in the past. If you need to grind down a square foot down by 2-3 mm, any of these tools would take some 15 mins to accomplish the task. With RAS, the same task would take 1-2 mins at the most, and you need to watch out to not overgrind, so fast is the removal. I actually use 50 grit paper rather than 24 even for stock removal specifically to slow down the removal and make it more controllable.

The dust collection might be not quite as good as with the Rotex or "regular" Festool sanders, but it is still way better than with any other big box stores brand's sander.Read more ›

I have had this machine for 6 yrs now and it still sands very well. I have stripped 8 full exterior homes, and currently on the 9th one with this same sander. I have dropped it off ladders. Used it to its maximum rpms for hours on end, day after day. Binding it up in corners and tight spots. And it still grinds paint off homes very well and aggressively. With finesse you can really work siding and trim boards without denting it all up with spiral marks every where.

So many Festool and Fein products are worth the value and beyond. I am a very satisfied customer!

I love Festool products, but this one was underwhelming. It's basically nothing more than a grinder with dust collection. After ordering this I decided it was a redundant tool in my collection as I already have a variable speed Makita grinder (9564CV). I ordered a sanding pad for my grinder and its essentially the same thing minus the dust collection capabilities. The other thing I noticed was you can raise and lower the brush skirt to better collect dust, this function was sloppy, a word I am not used to saying when describing Festool products.

I have used this thing to grind rust off of steel (need to purchase the metal brushes and a spark trap for your Festool dust extractor), on wood to take down excess material for scribing, coping, shaping. Paint removal on fascias. I read somewhere when I was looking at purchasing this tool that they called it "the termite" and I will agree with them. This will take down material quick. Wish I had purchased it sooner.
