My wife and I just purchased a conversion van and we was looking for a portable toilet. We came across the 5.3 gallon Camco Portable toilet. At first we were very skeptical about this portable toilet. Our main concern was if it let the smell out and if it leaks. Well when we receive the portable toilet, we noticed that it had a sample pack of deodorizer. I believe it contained four packets in it. It was easily put together and tall enough to where it felt like a real toilet. The bottom waste reservoir did not leak and contained the smell along with the deodorizer. The first time we emptied it, it had absolutely no smell and no yucky mess. What is cool about this portable toilet is that it has a separate section that contains the fresh water and it does not leak. It even fell over one time in the van and it did not leak. The toilet seal between the fresh and un fresh tank held well and keeps in unwanted smells, not that it had any. The flushing mechanism works perfectly almost imitating a household toilet. My wife and I really enjoyed this on our road trips, especially when there was no bathroom in sight. I recommend this portable toilet for travelers and campers. It does the job. Great product Camco. It's much cleaner than a lot of public restrooms and you don't have to worry about any unwanted nasty's jumping on you from public restrooms. We love it! It is very convenient and worth the price.

For the money, this is a great travel toilet (mine is in a small fiberglass trailer). The height is very good (approx 15" from floor to top of seat) and it's in a nice dark beige color so it's not so "white" in the field. The fresh water flush mechanism works well and the clips to separate top from bottom sections work well. The pull tab for the dump valve is well greased (and should be vaseline'd every so often) and my unit came with two Camco RV Toilet Treatment Drop-Ins. Basically these are orange-scented sachets that go into the bottom compartment then put an inch of water in to dissolve. Work very well and no smell.

I have a small cottage, whereby I empty this at the neighbors once a week and it works well. It's not very deep, so gifted men might have to hold their private parts off of the bowl with sitting. I don't use those chemical additives because I found they stink just as bad as none at all, so I put a little bleach in the top reservoir. Poop is what poop is and emptying this toilet is a total disgusting activity, but that's going to be with any of them. Just hold your nose and put a fan in the window wherever you dump it. I mean STINK like no stink you've ever smelled before.

Condensation with any of them builds up a slight bit, so wipe the toilet seat before sitting. All of these tend to stink like a bad rest area toilet if you don't keep the bowl wiped down periodically. The smell can get real bad if you're not clean. Keep handy some Clorox bleach wipes or a bottle of bleach water and wipe it down every couple days -- especially the parts where you'll need to touch (the plunger and lids). Don't flush the Clorox wipes or they won't make it down the toilet where you empty it. Keep the inside of the bowl wiped down, too, or it will stink like urine in a drunk alley. If you're a clean person, this toilet will work well for you.

IMPORTANT: The pull out lever gets hard to pull and push after a couple months. Solution: pour a little olive oil at the base of the bowl and slide the lever in and out a few times to grease it up. Then it's like brand new. Don't pull the plunger until you're ready to flush, or else you'll let the fumes into the room. Also make sure the cap for the bottom reservoir is on real tight or it will leak smelly doodoo and peepee on your floor!

SUMMARY: I wish I would have gotten one with a spring loaded release valve for the bottom of the bowl -- not the pull out lever kind, which makes things difficult without the olive oil. However, price-wise, I'm content.

Well, how does one write about a portable toilet and give it a thumbs-up without getting too... graphic?

First of all, it works and does what it's supposed to do. The price is right and it's constructed fairly well and light weight. It's blow molded and not a hard plastic, but relatively ridged. This model does sit about as tall as what you are used to at home. The seat is not real big, nor is the bowl, but hey, it's "portable"! It has a fairly large water reservoir and holding tank. We've used it a few times camping for about a 3 day average. There was 2 of us and it was just about perfect volume wise. We used it in a small privy tent (4x4x7) along with a Zodi shower (Which is also a decent product). I put a Reliance Bio-Blue Deodorant pack in the holding tank and it worked fairly well maintaining any odoriferous issues. One suggestion I may have is using a squirt bottle full of water to assist in keeping the bowl fresh. Also, if you spray the bowl moist prior to using, it seems to flush cleaner and you will actually use less rinse water!

I like the unit and would replace it with the same model if I ever had to. We don't use it much (3x a year perhaps), but I sure like having it when we camp!
