I thought this might be a low-price branch of the Chicago Cutlery brand but it is a well built, solidly constructed knife with a nice balance. The steel may be slightly thinner than some, but it holds a sharp edge well. [It has the Chicago Cutlery "tm" logo, but there is no marking stating country of manufacture.]

I was in search of an affordable chef's knife and I found it in this Chicago cutlery knife. The knife itself has a nice solid weight to it and doesn't look cheaply made. It comes in a hard plastic sheath which can be kept for safe storage. I have to say it isn't THE sharpest knife around but out of the package it worked well. This can be solved by basic sharpening - not a deal breaker! I will update on it's condition in a couple of weeks but so far so good.

I would recommend this knife to those in search of a great knife at an even better price.

*UPDATE*
This knife is still going on strong. I haven't sharpened it since my initial use and it is still sharp. There are no signs of rust, scratches, etc.

I have used Chicago knives for many years (since they were given to me as a gift over 20 years ago). It is nice to see they still have the quality as the first ones had. I have replaced a few since the gift I received and have always gotten Chicago knives. The knife holder was also just perfect, small, but very nicely made.

It's not the sharpest I've ever used but it's a good knife for the price. It sharpens up really nice so as long as you have a wet stone or sharpener you're good to go! I really hate cutting into whole butternut squash and large sweet potatoes but this knife passed the test and made it a whole lot easier.

I have received a defective package the first time. The problem was that the knives were too big for the slots and I had to return it for a replacement. I really liked the way this is marketed. Just the essentials and it has got everything that is needed for me. I am writing this review after ~5 months of my purchase. I am posting some pictures on the broken blade of the Chef Knife. This is annoying. "Chicago Cutlery" is a brand of reputation and I don't think they've really made it.

I use this knife when preparing artisan breads, and have had no serious complaints save one. The knife is somewhat less capable when slicing thick, robust crusts. While I am including it in the review for the knife, it is probably more an issue with the baking style I use.

The knife itself is sturdy and easy to use. An inexpensive, functional blade.
