This is a reasonable Access Point. If you don't know the difference between a router and an Access Point (AP) then this may not be what you are looking for. However, if you want to add additional coverage to your wireless footprint and want to bridge clients right on to you your already existing network, this does the job well.

Setup required setting the IP address of my laptop manually, then connecting to the AP's web configuration page, and setting up the parameters such as SSID, WPA/WEP/WPA (radius). The fact that it can do Radius authentication is a plus.

Coverage is ok with the built in antenna, it has a standard threaded SMA connector so you can add a higher gain one if you're trying to cover a larger room. Its compatible with iPads, Macs, Windows, and Linux machines using 802.11n adapters and will fall back to 802.11g if necessary.

It is pretty cost effective for an AP and its software is GPL'd so you can get a copy from the web site (although I didn't look at what it would take to rebuild/re-install).

If it had a bit more range with the standard antenna I'd give it 5 stars, as it is you can easily cover 1200 - 1500 sq ft of a large conference center or one floor of a house.

I bought the TP-Link TL-WA801ND unit intending to use it as a relay to extend the range of my existing wireless access point because it wasn't reaching all the house reliably and connections were dropping randomly. It worked fine for that purpose but I noticed that the signal strength on the TP-Link was stronger all over the house by itself than the Netlinx was even up close. I turned off the Netlinx and reconfigured the TP-Link to be the wireless access point instead of a relay. What a difference. I get reliable connections everywhere in the house, no drops and good speed.

As others have said, configuring this unit can be a challenge if you don't have some experience. The instructions aren't really written for someone who has never set up networks and doesn't already understand how all the pieces fit together. It's not that the instructions are written badly but rather that a certain knowledge level is assumed that may not be there. If you understand the basics of network configuration it should be a piece of cake.

Got this item to enable Web content on my new LG550, such as Netflix and Picasa. It works well, streaming movies and pictures using my wireless network. Unless you are very familiar with AP equipment, setup may take some effort, but it is not that difficult.
For my purpose I had to set it up as a client, and paper manual/CD manual guides you through the first few steps, but not all the way, and not specifically for the client configuration. I missed security step the first time and had to re-configure AP again.
Use Tp-Link support website to guide you through the setup: search for "How to configure 11N AP in Client mode"
Also In the LAN option I Selected Dynamic IP to get IP address from DHCP (my wireless router does that). If you mess something up and can't connect back to the AP there is alway reset button. :)
Overall seems like a good product for my application.

This is a really great product! Setup was a bit tricky but once I got it working it instantly gave me a nice boost to my wireless network. The unit works great and I would recommend to anyone looking to expand their WiFi in dead spots

Review update on 3/1/12: This Access Point still delivers great performance. I also know though testing with my phone and tablet it has great range even grater then my current WiFi router. So this product is still in my book an A+.

A few terms you need to understand:
Access Point (AP)
SSID
Router (not the same as a AP)
IP address
Subnet Mask
Gateway
MAC Address
DNS
DHCP
NIC
Ethernet
CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6
WAN
LAN
Ping
WEP
WPA
WPA2
TKIP
AES
POE
Watch Dog
(If you do not know the definitions to the terms above, and how they relate/interact with/to each other, it would be best not to continue until you do.)

Pre-Install TIPS:
You first must know what your LAN DHCP IP Pool is coming from your router. Typically in a home environment, it will be 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.253 or 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.0.253.
************************
Log into your router (BEFORE HOOKING UP AP) and look for an IP that you would like to use that is not currently in use. (192.168.1.100 OR 192.168.0.100 depending on your DHCP IP Pool that your router is configured for... is an easy simple suggestion that is most likely not being used)
***********************
You must realize that if you have your router as a DHCP server, and this AP as a DHCP server, you are creating an environment that conflicting IP addresses (multiple devices with the same IP) can occur. This is not advised.
***********************
I would recommend allowing your router to be the DHCP server. WE WILL ASSUME THIS IS THE SETUP IN THIS WALKTHROUGH.
