This compilation is a mixed bag from the fantastic Hollies. Here I Go Again(their first)is a bit of a let down. A lot of covers that hover near satisfaction but never hit the mark. Their version of "Stay" is too much of a manic paced carnival ride to really enjoy. This album really didn't launch the group in the U.S. back in the sixties, as expected.
Hear, Here on the other hand is sensational. Every song is great. "I'm Alive" and "Look Through Any Window" highlight the collection. The Hollies really came into their stride on this album and didn't let up until the last song (Too Many People) is over. All in all, an interesting archive.

First, let me state that I was estatic to hear that BGO was releasing the original U.S.A. Imperial Records versions of these two Hollies classic lp's from the 60's. But unfortunately my excitement was short lived.I will get to the reason for that momentarily.I have always found the American manufactured lp's from such great groups as The Hollies, The Yardbirds and even the Mighty Fab Four; (The Beatles),to be a better listening experience than their British counterparts. There is one fundamental reason for this preference; the U.S. releases scrapped weak cover tunes and in their place included the current hits by these artist on the lp. In the U.K. all of the albums from this era left off any hit singles and forced you to buy them in either the obnoxious ep or 45 rpm format. In the U.S. the hit single was always included and used as the bait to lure you into buying the more expensive full lp, but in the end, you were much better off for it.Now to the problem with these releases, one word; MONO, they are in mono which I detest and avoid like the plague. I know that the original Imperial Records stereo masters were usually enhanced to simulate stereo and were muddy and nowhere close to the clean crisp sound of the true stereo EMI English masters. This fatal flaw could have been avoided by using the true stereo EMI English masters and copying the U.S. song line up and sequencing . All we really wanted was the track line up and original artwork of the U.S.A. releases anyway. The superior U.K. stereo versions would have been the best of all worlds.I have to suggest that you avoid these Hollies reissues at any price, they are an inferior listening experience.
