The ballads. Wow, and these truly are their best ballads. Remember how you had your first slow dance at prom to "Rag Doll"? How you used to dim the lights and put on "Livin' On The Edge" before snuggling up with that special someone? Remember how you couldn't play "Love In An Elevator" for a few months after you broke up with your girlfriend because that was "your" song? Good thing they didn't clutter this one up with speed metal tunes like "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", "You See Me Crying", "Home Tonight", "Pink", or "Kings And Queens". No no, this is all about the BALLADS.

I can see the appeal of releasing a "Best of the Ballads" for a band like Aerosmith who has had many hit ballads. But what are fast songs doing in this collection? Love In An Elevator and Rag Doll are not ballads. They are not even about love. They are about casual sex.

I am sure this album is coming from the record company and not from the band. I just hope they can release one more good studio album before Steven or Joe kick the bucket.

I have been a fan since fifth grade. I realize they relapsed with drugs and they are pretty darn old now, but we need a new record for the love of Pete!! I know they are supposedly working on one now, but I have heard that at least three times from the band over the last 10 years. I can't believe it until I see it. I keep hoping though.

One of America's most treasured Rock `N' Roll bands Aerosmith is perhaps Rock's ultimate ballads band, they came with some many great songs and ballads like "Dream On", "Angel", "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" and so on. Some of these ballads are really special and have stood the test of time; many of Aerosmith's ballads are still played live today. Releasing an album of Ballad content only is not a new idea and certainly not a very original one. For Aerosmith you'd figure that with the amount of great ballads they made over their lengthy career that one could make a great collection of ballads. That's what Tough Love: The Best of Ballads attempts to do and fails miserably at. First of all I'm not even sure who this is supposed to aimed at. Maybe the casual fan who only or mostly likes Aerosmith's ballads? Tough Love isn't all ballads, it features Hard-Rock songs as well but this ruins the concept of ballads. If you're going to have a ballad best-of album and include some rockers why not buy a better and lengthier compilation at a similar price with the ballads and the bigger hits that does a better job at summarizing Aerosmith.

Tough Love is not a great Aerosmith compilation and while it does have the band's greatest ballads in one place, it falls short of whatever it's supposed to do. Some of the songs like "Livin' On the Edge" and "Rag Doll" probably have no business here at all. "Love In An Elevator" fits the concept of love but is not really a ballad. With only 12 songs, this is a pretty poor compilation that doesn't offer much.

It's been a while (and too many compilations) since the last Aerosmith album and it seems that fans are always promised a new album that never quite happens.

AEROSMITH-TOUGH LOVE/BEST OF THE BALLADS:

Just shoot me now. As YARDBIRDS/STONES purveyors of lean, mean RNB-laced hard rock, AEROSMITH unleashed a fine 'n funky series of albums in the 70s that stood hair and shoulders above most of the competition. They birthed the "power ballad" boom in 1973 with the sublime classic DREAM ON, which unfortunately became the band's schlock-in-trade during their streamlined second coming. Song-doctored hits ANGEL, AMAZING, and CRYIN' were annoyingly indistinguishable slabs of sacharrine slop, boosted by endless ALICIA SILVERSTONE videos on "EMPTY-V". Non-ballads LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR and RAG DOLL, while a step down from blooze-vibe oldies SAME OLD SONG & DANCE and LAST CHILD, inexplicably appear here, perhaps to break up the snoozer pace. Lest you doubt the term "cash-in", consider that AEROSMITH has vomited forth at least half a dozen compilations in the past decade, but no new music. Maybe it's just as well...they'll never come up with another DREAM ON, no matter how hard they try.

RATING: ONE HANKY

Note to Aerosmith: your fans would like a new album of original material written by you - no outside writers or soft-rock Scandanavian boy band ballad writers!!!!! Surely this is NOT the new Aerosmith album the fans have been promised and waiting for for years now???? In the last decade Aerosmith have released countless hits, best of's and greatest hits albums every year it seems!!!!! Absolutely zero new original material. Enough is enough!!!!!!!!! Who is this album meant to be aimed at exactly????? It may be the band's record label who keep re-releasing and re-packaging the same songs time and time again to milk the fans, but come on, this is becoming a joke now and is only ruining Aerosmith's legacy as one of the World's greatest rock bands.

5 Stars for the great music on here, but have to take 3 of them back, as Aerosmith now has more greatest hits packages than Lionel Richie. What is really bad here, is that this is supposed to be a ballads album, but "Rag Doll?" Please. It's a fast song, just like Janie's Got A Gun. This is more of an attempt at Stand Up Comedy than anything else. I have given up hope of a new Aerosmith album. I like the ballads, and I like their "Sellout" 1990's period, but I would like an Aerosmith album that rocked like the 1970's. I just don't think they have it left in them.
