We were looking for a set of reasonably-priced, stainless steel bowls to use for a rapidly-growing puppy. We knew he'd outgrow them quickly, so these Bergan bowls seemed like a good compromise between cost and durability. We THOUGHT Bergan meant quality, but the quality of this product doesn't live up to its price.

First, the good news: The bowls ARE durable, if durable means a puppy won't be able to chew them to bits.

Now, the not-so-good news:
1. They are SUPPOSED to be stainless steel, per the Amazon.com product description. Although the bowls look like they MIGHT be stainless steel, nothing on the actual product confirms this. Nothing is stamped on the bowl (not even the manufacturer's name or logo!) and nothing on the temporary product sticker affixed to the bowl's interior.
2. The bowl's metal is extremely thin. Not so thin that a dog would bite through it, but too thin to provide any real weight to the bowl. That, of course, means the dog will be pushing the bowl all over the floor while trying to eat or drink.
3. The rubber base, which SHOULD help prevent such sliding, is woefully inadequate. It is a relatively hard rubber offering very little "grip" on a tile or wooden floor.
4. Product construction quality is, by far, the worst offense of all. Both bowls we purchased had significant amounts of hard, black residue stuck (and I do mean STUCK) to both the interior and exterior of the bowl. They looked like smudges of black paint, but were probably the glue used to attach the rubber base to the bottom of the bowl. It took me the better part of an hour to remove (scrape, rub) most of the marks from the bowl, using a combination of alcohol, "Goo-Gone," and soap,

In short, this is the last Bergan product we will purchase. They should be ashamed. I hope this helps someone else avoid the same problem.

I saw four cups and thought - well if I'm feeding 2 cups of dog food at a time this should be a decent sized bowl.
In fact: 2 cups brims this bowl! Also - as a water bowl for a large dog it's just not big enough. I'd say these would be GREAT sized bowls for - 2 cats or a small spaniel (small-medium sized dog). Anything over 40lbs I'd get a bigger bowl personally because I don't like food/water gushing out the sides.
So the only reason I don't give 5 stars is because I'm not sure I'd call these bowls out by their cup capacity (and I'm not certain they really are 4cups of dry...).
But they went through the washer fine and are a good quality.

Our puppy has destroyed both his and our other dog's plastic bowls by chewing the sides and tops - they were both looking sad and abused. I spent a lot of time reviewing the different dog bowls out there trying to find the perfect bowl that would be durable and keep it's new look. Loki likes to chew on things (meaning it had to be metal or ceramic) and he tends to slide bowls around on the floor (meaning it had to be non-slip). What I found is that the ceramic bowls don't generally come with non-slip bottoms, which pretty much ruled them out since I didn't want to buy a mat large enough to hold two dog food bowls and a water dish. I liked the stainless steel colored bowls that were supposed to be non-slip as well as no-tip, but reviews of these types of bowls consistently said that dogs were pulling off the rubber ring on the bottoms and either chewing them up or eating them. Since Loki tends to eat any and everything he can (I don't know how we've be lucky enough to avoid surgery to remove foreign objects from his stomach so far), that ruled them all out.

When looking at these bowls, I was concerned that the bottom non-slip rubber didn't look very substantial. But, because these were such a good price, I decided to give them a shot and ordered two, one for each dog. I've been using them now for a few weeks, and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised and tickled with these bowls. First, the non-slip bottoms work very well - neither dog has any movement from the bowls at all when they are eating - and they tend to push food to the front of the bowls and push the sides to get it, so they have been testing it's effectiveness very well. Second, they are a medium-weight stainless steel (which I think is perfect) and clean up easily and well.Read more ›

This bowl doesn't seem to be stainless steel. it's very light weight and seems like aluminum. I am going to talk to Amazon about it. I have a stainless steel bowl that we have used for years. It's clean as a whistle. This bowl is just a few weeks old and has some sort of corrosion going on inside of it. It's not heavy duty. It's super thin and feels lighter than a tin can. Do not buy!

This is advertised as an 8cup bowl. I put 2 cups of food in it and as you can see its 3/4 full. Just a heads up for large dog owners it is filled with 3 to the edge and the dog food is a normal food not some large piece

I really don't understand people giving low reviews because of the size being off. The product itself is great quality. And for the size, if you read the product's features in the bottom, it tells you what the diameter of the bowl is. So I knew EXACTLY what size I was going to get. Just read the description before you order, don't be impatient!

Moving on, don't bother looking at the cup sizes, look instead at the product features. For the 4 cup capacity, it's 6.8 inches in diameter which is 6.8 inches side to side on the top part of the bowl, not the bottom. So it's ideal for up to 40lbs. weight animals. I got this for a 35 lb. dog and it works perfectly fine.

Remember this to help you = 1 cup per 10 lbs of weight

For example: 8 cup capacity = up to 80 lb. dog 4 cup capacity = up to 40 lb. dog

Dishwasher safe and non-skid bottom works for me. I have a wooden floor surface. No cracks or anything, these bowls are pretty thick. These will last forever just like my 4 other Bergan steel bowls that I've had for over 10 years.
