The charger works as advertised. The only thing I found lacking was a status light indicating that current was flowing to the battery when plugged into the cigarette lighter. I had to use a multimeter to check contacts at outputs for voltage - 19.2 volts. It appears well made, price is reasonable, and shipping was speedy.

After much contemplation and research,,, and calling the manufacturer I've been informed (buy the manufacturer) that this unit does NOT have any method of charge control. Beware! ... you can easily overcharge your battery(s) with this unit. Overcharging can cause serious irreparable damage to your battery. Therefore, unless you're continually monitoring the charge state, and can disconnect this charger at the appropriate point, you need to use a charger that incorporates a charge controller. Don't use this unit as a "connect it and forget it" method of keeping your batteries charged or "topped off". You need something that has a charge controller. 73.

UPDATE: In response to other comments; yes, if you're charging (maintaining) large capacity batteries such as automotive or marine, a controller may be unnecessary. Caution due however with smaller batteries.

The Schumacher Solar battery maintainer is a solar panel with a cigarette lighter type power plug and a set of battery clamps.

I measured the open circuit voltage at noon near the Summer solstice at 21.2 Volts.
The short circuit current at 191 milliamps and when connected to a charged automotive battery the current was 165 milliamps. The current will vary with the battery voltage so for a charged battery at 12.6 volts the current should be about 190 milliamps to get 2.4 watts. This panel did not put out the full rated 2.4 watts but probably close enough.

The output of a solar panel is unregulated and the voltage will drop down when connected to a load such as the battery so the high open circuit voltage is not a problem. The voltage needs to be higher than the battery to charge it. This high voltage would only be a problem if the panel put out much more current than this one or if you wanted to run a 12 volt device directly in which case you would need a voltage regulator. (Of course this device is meant to be plugged into a car battery). This panel does not put out enough to over charge a car battery even if it did put out the full 2.4 watts all the time, after all your alternator puts out over a 1000 watts to charge a battery and the regulator will drop it down to a level probably higher than the 2.4 watts when charged.

This is advertized as a maintainer because it does not put out enough current to charge a battery in a reasonable amount of time. Most modern cars will draw a small amount of current from the battery even when switched off running things like the remote door lock receiver or keeping the radio presets and clock running and maybe an alarm system. This is fine when the vehicle is used fairly often.

Have a truck I don't drive every day but alarm drains steady power and after 4 days dead. Not only does that kill a standard car battery but makes it inconvenient to get the truck started. So after my research, went with this solar maintainer because its very simple and well made. No need to worry about overcharging a car battery since its so low of wattage. The one downside or warning is don't start the vehicle with this still plugged in because it suppossedly will backfeed from the alternator and fry the unit. I wish there was a way where I just hardwire this in and not worry about it truly, still researching if a controller will prevent that. By the way mounted on my dash with some doubleback tape.

I bought this charger about 3yrs ago. I didn't really use it much. It was plugged in to keep my truck batterie charged but I couldn't really tell if it was working since I never really had a batterie discharge problem to begin with. But when my dad needed to keep a car batterie charged to run an electric fence last month I could see that it really does the job. We had a spot in the fence that was difficult to keep the cows in so dad ran a wire through it. It was to far to run power to so we tried a car batterie with this charger attached and it worked like a charm.

As an avid biker, I don't actually drive my vehicle that often - but when I do, it is important to me, that I am able to jump in and go - and not have to deal with a dead battery. This little solar panel is just perfect - and it works! Since my purchase, my battery has been perfectly charged - no muss - no fuss.

Our company car doesn't get used a lot, so the battery is constantly dying. We used the solar battery charger and have never had any more trouble.
