I bought two of these receivers to control low voltage outdoor lights. I was very impressed by their performance and relatively low cost. I considered using an X10 or Insteon system from [...], but that required more components and each was about double the price compared to Skylink.

Range: With the receivers outdoors I did two tests: First, I tested the range in somewhat of a straight direction to be about 200 feet with a 15 foot high hill, a couple pine trees, a 6-foot high wooden fence and lots of shrubbery in the way. Second, I tested successfully transmitting on the opposite side of a 2-story house going around 2 corners, a distance of 100 feet (10 + 80 + 10 feet). There were 8 tall trees along the way. However, this must have been near the end of the range, as walking 2 feet to go indoors and closing a sliding glass door blocked the signal.

This is essentially garage-door remote technology with rolling codes. You must buy a transmitter to go along with the receiver. I recommend going to the manufacturer's website to see the various combinations of transmitters and receivers available as there are many combinations ([...], click on Wireless Control Systems). The company also makes garage door transmitters, but their technology is different enough to not be compatible with the control systems components.

You can have multiple transmitters and receivers working in a mix-and-match combination: Up to 8 transmitters can be used with a receiver, but I don't know if there is a maximum of receivers that can work with a single transmitter. In my situation I have two 1-button transmitters programmed to switch on both receivers simultaneously and go off after 5 minutes, meaning that pressing the button turns the receiver on but cannot turn it off.Read more ›

Excellent way to turn on a hot water circulating pump from a remote bathroom. We have a long ranch and I put in a hot water loop instead of the typical recirculate to cold side system. I tried a timer but the hot water pump was going on when we were not using the water and the timer was not as reliable as this device. Bought a simple one button remote to turn on the water pump (that has a integrated temp control) and this device will turn on the pump for a timed period. Right now I have it at 15 minutes, but the water is hot at the faucet in about 5. We have 5 gallons of pipe carrying the hot water so that is 5 gallons each time we use this that is not wasted. The signal works from behind a closed bathroom door and the bathroom is approximately 75' from the pump.

I was looking for an affordable and reliable way to control the engine block heater in my tractor remotely so as not to leave it on all night when only 1 or 2 hours would be plenty of time to warm up the engine (Diesel). The ones sold by the Orange Box Store advertise going 80' but in reality it wouldn't operate at 20' let alone through a steel pole barn. This one advertises 650 feet with the same rolling code technology as garage door openers. Commercial devices of this kind are more expensive and harder to locate. This one works perfect and very affordable. It has the power to transmit 100' to the barn and through the shingle roof with no problem. I'm not sure it would work with a steel pole barn with a metal roof. It's possible that the antenna could be mounted close to the eve or window, if there is one, for better reception. I added a multi tap to the outlet on it and plugged in a light cord that I ran through the wall to a light fixture. Whenever I press the remote button, (Skylink TC-318-3) the light turns on letting me know that my tractor is getting heated up before I even leave the house. You can program it to stay on steady or timed for up to 1 hour. I prefer the timed program so the block heater doesn't run constantly. You can always press the button again before it times out to extend the run time. So far I have no complaints on it's operation. This is exactly what I wanted to do to remotely operate my heater. It is advertised as able to switch up to 1500 watts but the unit says up to 800 watts tungsten. My block heater is rated at 400 watts plus the 60 watt equivalent light bulb (actually draws 15 watts) is well under either ratings. If you want to control anything, gates, lights, pumps etc this is the perfect device to use other than commercial devices.Read more ›

This unit is not a problem solver for everybody. Bought 2 of those including one wall switch. Turns out to be a nightmare. The idea was to "flip the switch" and both plug ins would respond. Sometimes they do and sometimes only one of them does..... Then you end up in a funny loop that when you try to activate the one that did not turn on, the other one turns off. The helpdesk tried, but their suggestions are really not helpful and not consistent with why one would buy this product to begin with (ease of use where there is no option to run wires).

I’m really happy with the SkylinkHome 318 series. Of course with all the different options there could be hundreds of configurations but I figured I would share what I bought and how I configured it. I purchased the PA-318 (1500W Plug-In Receiver), two ID-318 (Wall Mounted Motion Sensors) and a TB-318 (Wireless Wall Mounted Transmitter). The goal of my configuration was to hook up all my yard lights with one motion sensor at the front door and one motion sensor by our garage. I had to plug in several items in to the PA-318 so used a power strip (worked fine). The motion sensors were configured to turn the lights on for five minutes and the TB-318 wall switch was configured to turn the lights on or off with no timer.

Everything was configured as stated above and worked perfectly. If I walk in to the house and want to shut off the lights that are on for 5 minutes because of my motion I can just flip the switch, if I have guest coming over I can turn the lights on and they will stay on until I flip the switch again to shut it off.

I am super happy with this setup, hope this helps someone looking to do something similar.
