I have used LaCie drives for the past 10 years, and they've always held up for me. Never a crash or problem with the hardware. I was VERY apprehensive of getting one of the "new" models after reading so many 1-star reviews. But I trusted my gut and went with the brand that I've trusted for so long.

What I use drives for, usually, is simply backup. I have several drives already. One for time machine, and the others for photo and documents, or film/video media. Sometimes that consists of the raw footage, but more often consists of final outputs of work I have completed. At no fault to LaCie, I learned the hard way once that you should always have at least two backups of your files that you value (my internal HD crashed many years ago, and I was once robbed - albeit not my hard drives... but ever since then I have at least two backups and keep one drive hidden away in my sock drawer or somewherearather)

But this new drive from the "new" crop of drives I am using for transferal of data for a documentary I am editing. Of the 2 TB I am using almost 75% of the drive in just raw footage and am using the drive constantly. This entails the converting, compression, exporting, and constant interaction with the drive to my computers software. So far there has been no issue to speak of. I anticipate no further problems as the bulk of the heavy-duty data transferring is done with. I use Firewire 800, and it works beautifully.

Here's a basic breakdown of some of the other elements that have been reviewed on amazon:

Construction: I found the quality to be matched to the old drives. The metal is solid and of a good quality.

I normally do not buy products with bad reviews. I read the reviews and I decided to buy the product because the top review said that firmware update solved the problem. Unfortunately, it is not solved. I got mine in July 2012. I had my first Macbook Pro hanging issue when this lacie was was plugged in via firewire. I then updated Lacie firmware. The new firmware reduced the frequency of 'Macbook Pro becoming non-responsive'. I use it for my time machine backup, but I have to unplug it every few hours, otherwise the finder would become non-responsive. If I am not using my Macbook Pro and leave lacie plugged in, I would not be able to log back in). Today was the last straw, I plugged lacie in and started a backup and it hung before the backup completed. I called Lacie customer service and scheduled a service -- I wish they would know that they sold faulty devices and offer a better service or offer free advance replacement (similar to what hard drive maker western digital and others do). I have started the service process and would update the review when I get it serviced. For others who are thinking about buying this product, you are warned!

I purchased this drive to replace a 6 year-old Lacie. Setup was straightforward and simple; Time Machine was running the first backup within 10 minutes of unpacking the drive. The case design and vertical mount capability provided an aesthetically pleasing look while saving space at my crowded workstation. The unit runs quieter than my older Lacie. This ends anything positive I can say about the drive as used to backup my iMac running OSX 10.7.4. The unit inexpicably "locks" in run mode approximately one in 10 backups. This behavior usually occurs when waking up my Mac after a period of inactivity. At this point the Lacie drive will simply freeze any program that relies on Finder; any attempt to use Mac-resident software or eject the disk is met with a permanent beach ball. The drive power switch also becomes inoperative, and the only method for resolving the issue is to unplug the unit from its power source - not an optimal solution. I of course contacted LaCie after the first incident. Over a period of three weeks via email, they said this was a known issue, and referred me to a link where I could download and install a firmware patch that would solve the problem. It didn't. They then suggested I reinstall the patch, re-partition the drive, erase all the data and start all over. I went through this lengthy process, to no avail. They then said the drive must be defective, and suggested I return it to Amazon. Unfortunately I was by then past my 30-day return window, and am now invoking my warranty with LaCie to get a new unit. My first LaCie was intermittantly cranky as well, so my suggestion to Mac owners is to avoid this brand.

LaCie drive failed. Power supply is OK, but per LaCie we must replace it first. Replaced. Not the problem (which we knew). They said it was the hard drives, but the drives (Seagate) tested perfectly. They want the whole unit back including drives but won't insure the security of the data on the drives. Round and round it goes. Bottom line: they will repair but not replace, and they won't guarantee the integrity of your data. Even if you know specifically what is wrong and are still under warranty, you have to do it the LaCie way or you get zero. This is a company that clearly forgot that "The customer is always right." Do not waste your money here.
