This is the type of product that you don't need until a major earthquake occurs...

...but if a major earthquake occurs, this product will pay for itself in what it will save you. I live in Southern California so I bought two sets of 4 latches. They were very easy to install in a single evening. All you need is a drill, a screwdriver, a pencil, a ruler and a pair of scissors. I also had an extra roll of double sided tape that I got from Home Depot.

A trick that I used after securing the base of the female latch (initially with double-sided tape only) was to insert the male latch that will be secured to the cabinet door into the female latch and then put some double sided tape on the back of the base of the male latch and close the cabinet door. When I opened the cabinet door, the male latch was stuck to the cabinet door in the exact right place it needed to be. I then marked and drilled the holes and secured the male and female parts of the latch with screws and the result was a working latch. Installation was a piece of cake...especially if you have a magnetized phillips head screwdriver.

While all 8 latches might not work, I am confident that most of them will and the result will be a lot of saved china and glassware...a lot more than the $50.00 that I paid for these.

Be prepared! This is a good investment, even though you hope that you will never need them.

I remember my mom (when I was a boy) cleanning the mess in the kitchen after a big earthquake (Chile: March 3rd, 1985). I'm in California now and there hasn't been a big quake for a while. I kept thinking that I have to put something that would lock the kitchen cabinet doors in case the dreaded "big one" hits. I found this earthquake safety locks here at amazon at a better price (set of 4). I installed them and I hope I never have to find out if they really work. Big earthquakes are not fun.

I gave it four stars because they are mostly plastic. I was expecting ... more metal. I still haven't gotten used to them. I have to remember: push-to-open ... push-to-close. There will be a small gap when you close the door.

The instructions said to remove the white paper from the double sticky foam then place it on the male ... then remove the red tape and close the door. The red tape is rather hard to remove, I did it first and placed it on the tip of my finger then remove the white and placed the foam on the male peg. Measure twice and drill once. I did predrill the screw holes because I have particle board wood cabinets.

That's it.
Take care

Latch works very well but installation instructions are insufficient. Easiest way to install latch:
· Apply two sided adhesive tape on front of receptor bottom (not provided, keep clear of screw holes)
· Mount receptor on cabinet frame per specified dimensions
· Drill screw holes with receptor in place and insert screws
· Apply provided adhesive pad to back of male end assembly (trim to keep clear of screw holes) & insert into receptor
· Close cabinet door and then open
· Male end should have adhered to cabinet door in correct location
· Drill & insert screws in male end assembly

I purchased the 4-pack of these latches in anticipation of purchasing more for all of my cabinets, so have been testing on a single, kitchen cabinet. After 2 weeks, the first latch began to fail intermittently where it would take multiple tries to release. Finally, it would not release at all and I had to access via the adjacent door and release from behind using a small screw driver. Despite further attempts at securing the latch in multiple positions it would no longer unlock once screwed in place. I replaced it with a second latch which had worked well for approximately 2 months and but now it is beginning to fail the same way. I followed the installation directions closely and they do not appear to be slipping from their original position.

When the latches work, they are an excellent solution so hopefully the manufacturer can offer some advice or perhaps acknowledge that I may have defective items. I have also posted this message to them via their web site Contact form.

I hate giving negative reviews and feel odd given all the other positive reviews so am prepared to revise my review if they can provide an assist.

First, we agree that the head of the screws too easily strip out--using a 1/16 drill bit to create a guide hole eliminates that problem. Second, pricing is all over the place--from as little as one for a $1 closeout price to one for $13 a pop! Do your research on pricing. Third, this latch requires a 1 1/2" x 2" flat surface for installation--won't work on all cabinets. We were able to use these on upper cabinets but not base cabinets. That said, these are well-worth using--easy to use on a daily basis and secure enough to stay shut.

I live in Northern New York and we get an occasional earthquake rumbling out of the Adirondack Mountains, but that has never been a major problem. I have 3 very clever cats and that _is_ a problem. They figured out all the "fool proof" latches we installed. I thought I was doomed to upper cabinet doors bashing me in the face, base cabinet doors bruising my shins, and finding the contents of a cupboard on the floor with a cat curled up snoozing in their place.

These latches have them baffled. Instead of constant hazards I now get plaintive meows and reproachful looks. They are still working on the problem and they may solve it yet, but in the meantime my bruises are healing and I can find things on shelves where they belong.
