I have highly mineralized sulfur smelling water. Last year I switched from bleach to Neutra Sul. I am very pleased with the results.

The Neutra Sul is a little more expensive, but the results are much more consistent than with bleach. With the bleach I would sometimes get the sulfur odor breaking through, and would have to increase the concentration to a point where I could smell the chlorine. Breakthough odor doesn't happen with the Neutra Sul and there's no nasty chlorine smell or residue. It's easy enough to monitor for excess peroxide in the water by looking for effervescence.

Our house is on well water that is rich in minerals and sulfur-reducing bacteria, giving the water an unpleasant smell and taste. The previous owner was injecting chlorine into the line to treat the problem, but research has linked chlorine to a variety of health problems so I decided to try hydrogen peroxide as an alternative.

The Neutral Sul is every bit as effective at oxidizing the minerals and bacteria as the chlorine was. Unfortunately it's also more expensive, but you get peace of mind knowing it's a safer chemical. Finding the right dilution ratio takes some trial and error. I recommend starting with a significant dilution at first and strengthening it from there as needed. We alternate when pouring into the solution tank, so water, peroxide, water. No shaking or other mixing and it works fine. Remember to always wear rubber gloves and eye protection when handling chemicals.

For anyone interested, our treatment setup is a Stenner pump that injects a 1 part peroxide to 2 parts distilled water blend from a solution tank at rate 10 directly into the water line after the pressure tank (Stenner recommends using the highest rate for longest pump life). The Stenner pump is wired to come on with the pressure switch/well pump. The treated water then sits in a 120-gallon retention/contact tank before moving on to an activated carbon filter with a weekly backwash. We started with a 1:4 peroxide:water ratio but found it too weak, so we gradually decreased the water part until the sulfur odor was no longer detectable. A 3-gallon batch of chemical lasts us a few weeks, but we are also light water users (just two of us).
