I would have never in a million years expected a traditional melodic death revival to come from two guys from Virginia, but it has. While influnenced by bands such as At the Gates, they don't rip them off. Arsis is much faster and more aggresive than anything by At the Gates. The vocalist/bass/guitar player sounds a little bit like Tomas Lindberg and the drummer is one of the best and fastest I've ever heard. If Amazon had half star rating this would probably get a 4.5 since there are a few downsides. Obviously, two people aren't going to come up with as diverse of material as 4 or 5 and as a result the songs sound somewhat similar and the production leaves something to be desired. Other than that this is a killer album. Props to Arsis and Insomnium for staying true.

A Celebration of Guilt

You open the CD case, and see a black and white photo of two guys.

Two.

Yet the death metal these two lay down puts most of the overly-melodic scene to shame. This duo plays straight up death with scorching riffs, relentless pounding rhythms, and refreshing songwriting. Despite the lack in numbers, these two have released an album that is lush and enveloping in sound.

The rollercoaster tracks seemlessly wind between explosive death/thrash themes and slow churners which grind like a wheel of absolute carnage. What attracts me most to Arsis is their ability to compose progressions with multiple distinct parts, which all feed off one another and propel the energy to a boiling point.

Underlying the album is an astonishing display of musical ability. On a spectrum of metal polarized by label-mates Necrophagist, and melodic heavyweights Arch Enemy, Arsis would fall not too far from the middle. Not a bad place to be at all. I have heard samples from the upcoming EP, which includes a 13-15 minute track which was originally written for a ballet!?!? Whatever, the sample I heard from this track indicates that we are yet to hear the best from this eventually legendary band. And though it seems these guys have yet to reach their potential, that is in no way a suggestion to wait. If Arsis continues to improve, they will only build on what is already a monumental "Celebration of Guilt".

Do we really need any more melodic death metal bands? That's what I thought before this album arrived in my mailbox. As a lot of the more notable melodic death metal bands have been moving more towards a less is more approach when it comes to heaviness, I kept losing interest in that scene. But if A Celebration of Guilt is any indication of the direction of where those bands are headed, melodic death metal might once again be my favorite style of music. While this is a band from Virginia, the traditional metalcore influences that you might expect from an American melodic death band have been replaced with black, thrash and brutal death metal making them sound like they are straight from Gothenburg. The reason this album is so fantastic is because Arsis takes a jump back ten years ago when the Gothenburg scene was growing and stayed focused on being brutal while creating melody. Differing from most current melodic death metal, A Celebration of Guilt almost never slows the tempo down, never uses an acoustic sound, and has no clean singing. Even so, the melody on this album is beautiful and complete. The brutality of the style is revived on this album due to heavy drums and harsh vocals. Michael Van Dyne keeps the tempo fast and refuses to falling into drum rhythms that are even close to radio friendly. Even so, the drumming is still complex and full of fills that forces the guitars to keep complex and creative, instead of being a constant double bass that becomes monotonous and boring. James Malone chooses not to sing a single note. His vocals are constantly harsh and bitter sounding similar to the vocal style of At the Gates or early Dark Tranquility or In Flames.Read more ›

Where the hell did these guys come from? This record comes blasting out of the gates with the

most technically proficient and mind numbingly complex death metal I've ever laid ears on and

never lets up for the entire rest of the album. Overall it reminds me heavily of genre defining

Death with the all over the map guitar work punctuated with tons of classic guitar screams and

solos backed by speed of light drumming but the songwriting here is even more complex, if that

were possible. It's also a bit more melodic than Death as you can hear nods to the more melodic

European death metal bands sprinkled throughout but don't let that fool you. Pound for

pound this stuff is more ferocious than anything I've ever heard in this genre.

The only thing I can see turning some people off is the endless tempo/riff changes. You're literally

dizzy at the end of each song trying to follow where these guys are going. There's probably a

dozen or more differently paced/distinctive riffs piled into each song so if you're looking for the

standard verse/chorus approach you won't find it here. To me that's what makes this the best

death metal band out there but it is tough to listen to this sucker from start to finish without feeling

some sort of motion sickness. Just trying to keep up with the drummer is mind boggling in itself.

The other area they may take a knock in is the vocals. They're not quite as throat ripping as late

period Chuck but they're certainly on par with the majority of the bands in this genre. So to me

they're not a plus but not a negative either.

The craziest part of it all is that this band only has two guys.
