This is not the first external drive I have purchased, but it is has the largest capacity of the three on my desk, while it takes the least space. I am a photographer and need LOTS of space to store files. It is also very quiet and is said to use less electricity. And it is FAST.
What else is there to say?
I would buy it again.

This review is for the 3tb drive. [see edit below]

I give Fantom drives, overall, 5 stars. I LOVE Fantom drives - they seem to get good quality drives from manufacturers, throw them into their containers, and they are very reliable. There are ELEVEN of these in my room at the moment. Still of the eleven, ten are either 1 or 2 tb each. This is my first 3.

For a 3tb drive, I didn't listen to Mark Solomon (the 1 star review). Thought I was immune to the "too big drive issue".

Just do partitions, use a Mac, whatever.

If you are not doing anything "odd", then you can probably make the 3tb drive work fine. I'm even thinking now how to use this differently than I originally intended vs sending it back.

MY major issue? I can't set up a Truecrypt partition, even a small one. Same issue as Mark Solomon: can't use 512 byte sectors, or 512e emulation within 4k sectors.

If you don't know what a windows image backup is, nor what a truecrypt partition is - then these drives might be wonderful. If you do, you may have trouble with these 3tb drives - they demand you do it "their way."

Ok, yeah - I'm sending this back - getting another 2tb instead.

Note: these 3tb drives WILL work with Windows 7, and will work under Mac OS X. It's when you try to do something that requires 512 sectoring or 512e emulation that the problem arises. Two already mentioned are Windows Image Backups, or partitioning with Truecrypt. I'll bet there are others.

I don't want to give the impression these drives don't work under Windows 7 or Mac OS X. They DO work. Just that whatever company Fantom is contracting these 3 tb drives from - didn't feel the need to say these larger drives dropped one important level of support.Read more ›

I have 4 of these types of drives and none of them has ever failed. They are solidly built, they are super quiet & run cool. They cost a little more than the others but it's worth it. The Only reason for 4 stars vs 5 is that they're not 7200 RPM, they cost a bit more & this 3 TB only has usb 3.0 interface.

This is my seventh drive by them. 4 Firewire drives and now three USB drives. They just keep going and going. I however grow out of space. This drive is dedicated to my "TimeMachine" and is super quiet. This has allowed me to move the other drives away and turn them in to a NAS. I just continue to be impressed with them.

Works great so far. The metal casing is much better in cooling the HDD compared to other non-metal HDD enclosures.

This is the second one that I have purchased, am now using them for backups of the home system here. One is for just daily/month end backups, and then at the Year's end that last backup closes out the year. This stays connected at home usually. The second is for total year end files and copies of monthly backups, plus all past year end backups. Was able to retire many dozens of CD's, DVD's from past years on it also and its still less than 1/4 full. It also contains copies of the prior years monthlies of each year are stored on this for yearly archival use. The year end unit then goes off to the now quite a bit emptier safety deposit box for safe keeping for the year. The at home is used all the time, it does full backups of everything daily on it, the current monthly manual backups. This is a full mirror of all data drives, along with all of the Home Server storage data files. The USB 3.0 makes for much much quicker data transfers, quite silent when working, and has worked flawlessly since day one.

I have used many drives internal and external, I have worked in the tech industry for over 20 years and have seen many hard drives fail, some just after the warranty expires. These Fantom drives have proven the most reliable over a period of time, and with the green technology powering down when not in use help save on power consumption as well.

Great product/Great Value. Compatible with Mac and Win systems out of the box. File transfers a breeze. Got this to replace a Seagate 4TB, which would only transfer small file chunks, and then with constant lock-ups, freezes, and crashes requiring me to constantly restart my computers. I was able to drag and drop 2TB of data from the older Fantom in a single swoop straight on to the Fantom 3TB. Runs quiet, and cool. USB 3 is reasonably fast. Have had 4 of the Fantoms now over a 3 to 4 year period with absolutely NO problems.
