I have purchased many Vantec enclosures, and have been mostly a very satisfied customer. All the USB 2.0 cases I purchased were great values. But in July of 2011, I purchased the first generation of the USB 3.0 case from Vantec. That was a disappointment. The first generation case had a loose solder to the USB 3.0 controller, and never worked more than intermittently. This latest case though is up to the Vantec standards, and I'm quite happy with it. It is solid, dissipates heat nicely, looks good, and is very reasonably priced.

Nice aluminum case, drive mounts inside securely. Somehow they feel a little bigger than others I've used, but definitely elegant.

Use tip - if your drive needs that much current, plug in the 2 usb power connectors first, then plug the drive in.

Anything else might not get the drive booted properly, or might shut down your usb ports...

Lower power drives - you can ignore the second usb plug.

I've probably purchased 7-8 of the NexStar CX series of enclosures over the years for home and work both for 2.5" and 3.5" drives. Having had mixed results with other enclosures made overseas these have never let me down so I've stayed with them. They have a simple, clean design and installing a SATA drive is easy (you'll just need a small gauge Philips head screwdriver). If you're like me and like to keep your stuff from getting scratched my only recommendation is to get some small self-adhesive felt pads (Home Depot) to stick in the corners on the underside.

It's true that if your goal is to get the smallest external drive possible you should be getting something like a WD Passport drive or similar. If you're buying an external enclosure you should expect it to be larger but you're also likely doing so in order to specify your own pick of 7200 RPM or SSD drive. These enclosures are pretty low-profile but, as said in another review, are a bit longer (5.5"L x 3.25"W) than pre-assembled drives so be prepared. Certainly not an issue if you're leaving the drive on your desktop or stowing it loose in your laptop bag, but probably a bit of a challenge if you're adamant about getting only ultra-small stuff you can jam in your pants pocket.

The drive comes with a short, secondary USB plug attached to the main cable to provide supplemental power should you be connecting to lower-powered ports. However, the USB 3.0 spec requires a minimum of 900 mA, I believe, and I have yet to plug only the main cable into a USB 3.0 port and not have the drive mount without issue. Perhaps you might need the supplemental power when connecting to a USB 2.0 port, but that hasn't been my experience yet either.Read more ›

Purchased two of these. They are very well made and I loved the design as well as the fact that they are aluminum and feel very sturdy. The only problem, and this was a MAJOR one, is that they would not connect to my PC. I tried USB 3, USB 2, a Windows 7 desktop, a Windows XP desktop, and a Windows 8.1 laptop. Same issue on both units. Plugging in & out they might connect 1 out of a dozen tries. I contacted Vantec support who told me to troubleshoot the USB ports and drivers on my PCs. I returned these for refund and purchased two similar units from Anker. The Anker devices are plastic but they work every single time I connect them.

Used this for the 640 GB hdd that came out of a laptop. I want to have a convenient external backup drive for the same laptop. This item is attractive, small and well constructed. Was fairly easy to assemble, but I was confused about the rails. The tray fits below the rails not inside them. I'm backing up the computer now. I'm using both usb connections on the interface since the hdd is a mechanical not a ssd one. This laptop (Asus G73Sw) has a 3.0 USB port, which is why I bought this enclosure. I've been using this for backups for the last couple of months now, and it's insanely fast! It is definitely working in USB 3.0 mode. I highly recommend this enclosure!

Works well, appears well made, but only increased my SSD speed, (using Crucial 256GB ssd), by 3x over that same SSD in a USB 2.0 enclosure.
I should have seen about a 7x speed increase, which tells me the controller built into this device is not all that good.
Still it does work, it's well made, and looks good, and is inexpensive.

Would like to love. It's a little bigger than other cases I have. My biggest issue is the cord. I wanted this to use a cord similar to a Western Digital 2.5" elements drive, not a USB-A to USB-A cable.

I should give the case credit though.... it's 2x faster compared to the Anker I also bought!

Vantec NexStar CX NST-200S2-BK 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Black)

Great price for this enclosure - I bought two, along with a competing product that was slightly more expensive. This unit is slightly longer, fatter, and wider than the other unit (Coolmax).

By comparison, the edges are more rounded on the Vantec enclosure (easier for sliding into a bag compartment, and the case feels very solid. This enclosure employs a sled where the drive can be securely attached. The unit works perfectly.

Another reviewer indicated some concerns with the screw lengths used to attach the end (USB Connector) component. I don't understand the concerns, as the screw lengths are perfect and are laterally spaced so that they would never come into contact with the drive.

All-in-all, this is a very nice enclosure for the price - I travel internationally and have no concerns with this enclosure (and a mounted drive) surviving any trip.
