Bad Blood is a fresh take on the morbid tradition of country/folk (e.g., "Knoxville Girl," "Wreck On The Highway,"). Rather than being multi-versed ballads in narrative detail, Ana's songs are sequences of freeze-frames, moments of bad intent, miniatures of that instant when the decision turns without looking back into taking it all straight to hell, whether it's as bad as murder or as merely cruel as breaking a heart. She delivers these songs in an easy voice with no push and little vibrato, and her lack of drama makes the content all the more chilling -- and it's even more riveting when the music is bouncy. She's got some great hooks and some delightful surprises both rhythmic and melodic, plus a talent for nuance that you sort of catch out of the corner of your eye and then turn your head to stare at and find you can't stop looking, just like some of the train wreck situations she writes about.

You need to listen to this more than once, on good sound equipment. You can buy it on iTunes, but for some reason Genius doesn't recognize it, so iTunes won't create Genius playlists with it, which is a real pity. I guess Genius doesn't know how to categorize her. I would take that as compliment! In any case, this CD has found a spot in my regular rotation as I'm sure it will in yours.

I'd first heard of Ana Egge on an NPR radio program a few months ago. Liking what I'd heard, I bought the cd "Bad Blood" and have become a fan. A first-rate storyteller with melodies to match.

Her voice speaks for many women especially in "There won't be anymore" Loved the whole cd. Look forward to more future releases. Recommend it as one of the best of 2011.

Ana Egge is a subtle but exquisite artist. "Man of Iron" from her first CD River Under the Road zoomed to #1 in my personal top ten as did her lovely version of "Old Fashioned" off the tribute set My Old Man: A Tribute to Steve Goodman. On a different tribute set, Forever Dusty: A Tribute to Dusty Springfield, her version of "Breakfast In Bed" caught my ear. Recently, I've been spinning "Straight to My Head" from her 2005 set "Out Past the Lights." With that as background, I recently found that this 2011 set slipped by me; so I'm just now tuning in to her latest work.

Egge's "Bad Blood" is a gem. The opener "Driving With No Hands," a churning midtempo rocker that shines with Steve Earle's production and Allison Moorer on supporting vocals, is about somebody totally out of control, "He went flyin' into the fire light, right into the line of fire." The title track also rivets as Egge's stoic delivery emphasizes the disquiet mind from the lyric, "I loved you and I hated you; I prayed for you and stayed away from you; I called the cops and I blamed you." "Motorcycle" is a delight with Rob Heath's booming drums and Ana's voice somehow embodying both the essence of stillness and the speed of sound, "Sounds like escape, the sound that it makes, a hush in my ears as I fly outta here.
