Very quirky device. Has a ton of "safety" features in an effort to make this completely idiot proof, but they severely compromise functionality. It checks when you connect to a dead battery that the dead battery has at least 11.5V, if it doesn't, it won't enable any output. Also if there is any load when the unit is connected, it won't enable output. There are ways to override this, but the override is only effective for 20 seconds, so if you can't start your car within 20 seconds of performing the override sequence, you must disconnect and start over. Yes it does have sufficient power to jumpstart most heavy vehicles (I was able to start a v8 motorhome with it), but it is very frustrating to try and use compared to a conventional lead acid battery type unit. I imagine a fair number of these get returned as "dead" when in fact the unit is just disabling the output.

I bought this unit and the Start Monkey 200 two years ago. I followed directions and charged them on a semi-regular basis to maintain charges. I used the 400 unit once and it did its job. However, after two years both are junk. Neither will hold a charge and are useless. The warranty is for one year, which is grossly inadequate for such a costly item as this, and the company is located in England and customer service stinks. There are less costly and smaller units out there that do a good job and have better warranties and customer service. Do your homework and don't waste your money on these things.

Good looking product, handy and got all the right safety features. However cannot hold a charge and when I needed it most it has failed me. At first I thought I was at fault but realised that the Startmonkey 400 is a substandard product when cheaper and better products exist. I feel cheated when I thought I bought a premium product. Kudos to Pwertraveller for their brand marketing but shame on them being a company with no substance.
