It took my two young cats, each under two years old, about a month to get used to having these in the house.

Even my older cat, Serena, at the age of 12, is interested in the two bottom layers and will prowl around and look, especially in the bottom layer.

I purchased 7 of these Catty Stacks in various colors.

WHAT I LIKE:

* The colors complement each other. Even if you don't have a pattern in mind, grab some colors. They all go together (except for the pink; it probably goes best with white).
* Cats do love playing in and out of cardboard boxes!
* You can switch these around in different locations of your home or in different patterns to keep things interesting.
* Easy assembly. I did this by myself. There is an online video that is helpful.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:

* The clips are easy to lose. I haven't lost one yet, but I've been diligent. Just be sure to clip them on tightly and if you hear one fall off to put it back on immediately.
* The clips could be larger. In some applications, depending on the configuration of your boxes, they don't always hold your boxes together that well and you'll find a larger clip could work better.
* Landing on a smooth surface can be jarring or unsettling for some cats. My younger cats are more adventuresome and don't seem to mind experimenting. My older cat prefers to stay on the lower levels. Catty Stacks no longer sells the pillows made to cover the tops of these.
* Landing on something that has a hole in the top of it takes some getting used to. My kitten Oliver landed on a cube higher up, then fell through the hole in the top of it and went inside the cube. He wasn't hurt and was fine. But this isn't like ordinary cat furniture.

This is a sturdy, cardboard cube that folds together using a simple tab system.
Each side has a pre-cut hole; some are smaller and offset, while others are larger and centered. The large holes are scored and can be cut even larger still with a craft knife. Our "big boned", portly cat has no trouble fitting through the larger holes, while the smaller holes provide more box surface for standing and resting.

The outside of the cube is a solid color, while the inside is, well, cardboard colored.
The cubes are not laminated or coated in any way. I initially worried that the cats would scratch on them and tear them up because of this, but we've had them for two months and they still look brand new.

It occurs to me that the unlaminated cardboard would make these super easy to decorate with craft paint, markers, crayons, or colored pencils. I could see this being a great rainy day project for a young pet owner, or even a service project for a group of kids to decorate and donate to their local cat shelter. Or, how about having local artists decorate cubes to auction off as an animal shelter fundraiser? I didn't really think of them as a "blank canvas" until I put them together at home.

The cubes clip to one another using metal binder clips (included). This allows them to be arranged and rearranged many different ways. I love how lightweight they are; very easy to move as needed.

Our cats adore having the cubes connected in a long, low "tunnel" down the hallway; they run across the top or through the middle every time they travel up and down the hall. They stash toys in there and love to leap out to surprise one another and unsuspecting people. It has turned a space we weren't using for anything into a cat playground!

I have two, large long hairs (13 and 18 pounds) who spend most of every day on or in their Catty Stacks. I bought 8 boxes and set them up in a corner near a window. It is their favorite place to perch and watch the outside world. They often play with each other through the many holes, and sleep on top of or inside the boxes. I placed a bunch of old t-shirts inside a couple of boxes for them to nest on. They frequently rub their faces with pure joy on the many edges and I change the arrangement once in a while to keep things interesting for them. They were a little tricky to put together at first, but it was easy after I watched the help video on their website and figured the first one out.

It's subtle, but there is a top/bottom to these boxes (as indicated by the product label). They are not perfect cubes as they are slightly shorter than they are wide and deep. If assembled and stacked correctly, they are really very strong. I don't doubt that their claim about being suitable for multiple pets up to 20 pounds is accurate. However, if you stack them sideways, they can come apart if you have heavier cats, so it's important to use them as designed.

I've read reviews stating that these are just cardboard boxes. Yes, they are cardboard, but the cardboard is special because I've never seen a box this hard/strong. I've had mine for almost a year and after lots of rambunctious play, they still look brand new. My cats have several scratch surfaces around the house and have decided not to scratch their Catty Stacks. However, if they do decide to at some point, I will only have to replace the box that gets damaged instead of the whole thing, and better that than my couch!
