I used this mount to hold a Contour Roam video camera while driving through some national parks. It worked perfectly and was easy to conceal under the seat when stopping for hikes and lookout points. For lightweight point & shoot and small video cameras I wouldn't hesitate to use it. But I wouldn't mount a heavy DSLR and expect it to be stable while driving. I unfortunately forgot about it (under the seat) when I returned my rental car, lost the first one! I reorder another when I got back home for my next trip. The suction cup mount can detach from the base for other uses, well made and hard to beat the price on Amazon with free shipping.

NOTE: I did get the AKRON Mount to work by jamming part of a washcloth under part of the ARKON Mount making my Honda Dash "virtually flat" and with that addition, it became stable.

READ ON FOR THE "PRE-WASHCLOTH" ISSUES AND REVIEW:

I attempted to use the ARKON CMP212 Friction Camera Mount in my Honda Fit. Unfortunately, the Honda Fit doesn't have a really flat area on the dash and the ARKON Mount is not steady no matter where I place it or what I do. The problem is really the design of the weighted pad. ARKON made the mount with a really stiff pad which doesn't allow the pad to develop a "form fit interface" with any dash top that is less than flat. It's not supple, it's stiff and sort of rocks back and forth on the dash. It rocks with or without a camera in the mount, even on a kitchen table-top flat surface as the pad has a slight bottom curvature.

For reference, I was attempting to use a Motorola Atrix Smart Phone/Camera mounted in a holder designed for a tripod mount. The weight of the phone & holder is very light and the ARKON mount rocked. I tried to use my Canon R300 camcorder on the mount but it shook more than I do when I go "handheld".

In comparison, I do have a similar Garmin "traction weighted mount" that I use with a GPS unit. The Garmin mount has a SUPPLE-FLEXIBLE weighted pad and it hangs onto the non-level dash on my Fit quite nicely without any discernible movement.

POST REVIEW:

The ARKON Mount, Washcloth, Smartphone/Camera and I are now going out to photograph U.S. Highway 99 before the local CalTrans Construction project begins. Thanks heavens I had a spare washcloth.

It works without being too fancy. The bottom feels like a friction neoprene type material and has a good weight to it. I haven't had it slide off my dash yet and I have cars with a leather dash and a plasticy dash. The center of the horseshoe is a smooth surface that you can mount other suction cup accessories onto just FYI. The neck that it comes with is on the shorter side which can be good or bad depending but it works fine with my Contour roam, GoPros may have trouble because of the difference in mounting point and design but I don't think they will with typical mounting points. I have another slightly longer goosenech suction mount and that seems to transfer a little less vibration to the camera but otherwise you can use the suction on this separately from the dash mat. So this is 2 in 1 really. Not bad for the price, others charged much more for theirs and I wasn't paying that to try and see if I liked the dash pad way of mounting. This was a cost effective way of checking my options. I think overall it is a good deal.

I originally got the dashboard base version over just the suction cup because my vehicle has a textured dashboard, so this also does for my GPS

However, after testing, the friction base helps absorb some of the vibration when driving. I had previously mounted the camera on the windshield, and the video showed every little bump. It was much less on this base.

Very nice and sturdy.

Me and some buddies were taking a road trip and I had always wanted to film our shenanigans. I use a Panasonic HD Camcorder and I also have a Canon SLR. The mount did not move from its spot on the dash the entire 1,200 miles. No sliding when we took corners, no falling down when we would brake. So why the 4 stars? I had to deduct one point for the fact that the mount had a slight lean to it any time I had the camcorder mounted to the outer side. Not a huge deal, but it definitely was a bit of a letdown. But I definitely recommend it.

I attempted to fashion my own dash mount, could not acheive a steady fixed platform. The arkon device filled the bill for me.
It stays put on my padded dash board when turning and seems satisfactory re vibration transmittal. Not rock steady due relativly
light weight, however is very handy and versitile. Not for weighty cameras, not expected to be. Item received well packed.

I got this that I can mount the camera recorder on the windshield and the GPS on the dashboard. The heavy-weight seat of the dashboard mount stays in place well, even a hook is suppose to stick to the dashboard. The hook did not work but the seat does.

...and it turns out the suction cup assembly can be used directly on the windshield too.

Too make a long story short, I was in need of an alternative to using adhesive on my windshield to mount a Car Black Box -Timetec® Road Hawk DC-2 vehicle recorder. Using this friction mound was my Plan A...until I discovered that the DC-2's tripod mount point was on the top of the camera.

However, the suction cup assembly that fits to the weighted (beanbag) area of this mount secures to the windshield perfectly, and it's male tripod fitting allows use of the camera's tripod mounting point.

No adhesives on the windshield and the camera can now be moved easily from car to car.

Nice; select with confidence.
