They are also lying about their Linux support.
There is no driver in kernel for such a simple device (a dumb HBA).
The driver that HighPoint provides does not build under modern linux kernel (it expects either 2.4 or 2.6).
When version checking is bypassed and make/make installed the driver does not work anyway (unable to very controller issue).

I have submitted a ticket regarding driver issue and I haven't received reply.

I have returned the card as it is useless.

I simply see no reason why this card should exist if it does not work under either Linux or FreeBSD, as having 36 disks in a Windows machine makes no sense (as neither you can use ZFS nor mdadm/LVM), specifically when this card targets low cost market where Windows does not belong.

Complete utter disappointment.

Will be rethinking whole setup and using Intel RES2CV360 with re-flashed IBM M1015 (LSI firmware).

Despite all tech specs (on amazon and on on manufacturer web site) say it has support for FreeBSD there's only Linux driver on the web site and FreeBSD-8.2 does not support the card out of the box.
Don't buy. I am sending it back.

Great controller if you are just looking for as many ports as you can get on a budget price. I use this in my Windows Home Server with FlexRAID. I have about 22TB of storage across 16 drives attached to it. It has never failed me, and email notifications work well when a drive encounters a problem or goes offline due to failure. I am able to hot plug/unplug drives without any problem. The only downside I see is no SMART pass-through mode. I have to enter the HPT web interface to view the SMART values of the drives, as they are not passed through into Windows. I contacted Highpoint about this, but the case pretty much went unanswered and they told me just to setup alerts in the HPT web interface, which I did and it does work as promised. The DC7280 does have Linux support, but it is shoddy as some have said. There is a driver floating around on the web and it can be easily found. This driver has now been incorporated into the latest FreeNAS release, so I may migrate my WHS box running FlexRAID over to FreeNAS and give it a try.

I've had one of these cards in service for a couple of years now, running on Debian and now Centos. It is possible to build the driver for the 2.6 kernel but it helps if you know what you're doing.

The card offers decent performance BUT the driver needs work.

Hot-plugging a drive will hang the entire system for several seconds.

A drive failure will lock the entire system and it will lock up again after rebooting. It can be very difficult to figure out which drive is causing the system to hang.

Once you've got 32 drives in a system, a failure is pretty likely to occur and the whole point of having all those drives is that you have things like hot spares configured so you can keep on going. Unless reliability is completely unimportant to you I would not recommend this card.
