I did alot of research into deciding what to buy as my first uke, so I already was sure that the Makala would be exactly what I was looking for. So let me start by telling you about my experience buying from this particular seller.

On the day I was expecting my uke to arrive I received an email that my package had been broken up into two shipments. Later that day the first arrived. It was the case, tuner, and polishing cloth. No uke. Big disappointment, right? WRONG!! Two days later the uke finally arrived and my disappointment was quickly washed away when I discovered that it also came with a free gig bag! And not just a crappy thin bag that's little more than a plastic covering. The gig bag is pretty decent quality, is padded to add some protection and has a couple pockets to put things in. The hard case is best for home storage, and I have alot of learning before I'm ready to play shows. But the gig bag is definitely going to be very useful, and getting it for free on top of everything else in the package makes this a really great deal. The hard case is also pretty good quality, and the polishing cloth isn't a tiny "throw in" to make the overall package seem like a deal. It's a good size and is useful.

Now onto the uke itself. As I said, research clearly indicated to me that the Makala was the way to go for a beginner uke. Sure, there are a few others that might be a little cheaper, but quality of the Makala is very good. Agathis is a very good material for acoustic instruments, but it's relatively easy to harvest, which is what allows them to make a uke whose quality is disproportionately good for this low of a price (this was something else I researched also). The quality is so good that this isn't just a good uke for beginners.

I bought the Kala Makala Tenor uke as a learner's ukulele. This is my first ukulele, so I don't have anything to really compare it to, other than guitars.

The uke is very light weight and looks pretty and well-made. This one came with a hard case, and I am so glad I got the case, because if feel like the uke is a bit delicate and I have been traveling with it extensively.

Even if you are familiar with tuning a guitar, I would recommend buying a tuner for this uke. I had trouble keeping it in tune at first. For the first couple of days I had to adjust the tuning every 30 minutes or so. But the strings finally stretched and now it holds a tuning very well.

All in all, I really don't have anything negative to say about the uke. It looks good, sounds good, and is fun to play. One word of caution, the Tenor uke is a LOT bigger than the ubiquitous small Soprano ukes. Think child's guitar sized. But the larger size also comes with a far richer tone (in my opinion) than the Soprano models, so the size does't really matter to me. I would definitely recommend the Makala to a friend.

I've played Guitar and Bass off and on for over 10 years now and, despite owning over a dozen stringed instruments I've never fallen in love with any quite as much as I'd hoped I would. I've always really liked the Ukulele's sound, but the soprano Uke I picked up a few years back just didn't cut it for size, this tenor Uke, however fits me like a glove and I've never had so much fun just playing around!

It's so easy to play; I'm learning new chords every day and, just as easily learning songs and composing bits and pieces of new music myself. The nylon strings took a few days to break-in and stretch so that the instrument holds a tune, but now that the strings aren't actively stretching it sound coming from my uke are beautiful and full. This has been one of my best purchases in quite a while and I wouldn't have any reservations about buying again as a replacement or a gift.

All of that being said there are a few very minor issues; firstly (not really an 'issue') this order arrive with everything pictured, however the description and some buyers state that they also received a gig-bag (soft case) in addition to the hard case pictured, I did not. My order included a (surprisingly good) tuner, had-case (and carrying strap), beginner's DVD, cloth, and instrument, a great value for the price even without the gig-bag.
Secondly there's a distinct buzz caused when playing the 'C' (3rd) string that comes from the plastic floating tuning peg guards/covers that was annoying enough that I threw some electrical tape under each one to stop the rattling, this solution worked great and may be specific to my instrument (admittedly I'm a bit anal and this probably wouldn't bother the average individual).

Over all I can't recommend this instrument enough!

This ukulele is ok but not great. Of course this is subjective, but I have since purchased other ukuleles (some which cost less than the Makala) and am much more satisfied with them.

The sound of the Makala seems somewhat deadened...sort of hard to explain in words. I switched to Aquila Nylgut strings - which helped playability but did not improve the sound.

The most bothersome characteristic of this ukulele is the sharp corner around the edge of the sound board. It really digs into my right forearm (strumming arm) and leaves marks. It gets really uncomfortable really fast. None of my other ukes have a sharp edge like the Makala. It seems like it would have been a simple and inexpensive step for them to relieve the sharpness with a quick sanding along the edge.

The case and tuner are both decent.

Now that I have other ukuleles that sound so much better and play better (and don't dig into my arm), I think I will donate the Makala to our high school's ukulele program.
