This seems to be the only cabinet latch out there designed exclusively for earthquake protection, and it is an elegant idea that has no effect on the normal use of the cupboard until the earthquake actually happens.
I installed three of these and tested each one by rapping on the door with a rubber hammer. Each one failed to latch the first time even though I kept refining with each succeeding install.
The first one was installed after watching the installation video twice. It followed the details exactly, yet the catch on the door had to be lowered to work by elongating the holes so that the catch was about 3/16 lower than stated in the instructions (that is, the foam spacer block that is supplied needed to be thicker). I should mention that there was about a quarter inch standoff distance between the door and the shelf.
When I installed the second one the door was flush with the edge of the shelf and I should have noticed that if the installation instructions are followed, it is impossible for the magnetic catch already on the door to engage. I had to modify the latch by cutting out a piece of the front to give clearance, then it worked. On this door I was smart enough to mount the catch 3/16 lower so that I did not have to elongate the holes.
The third one was on the same cupboard set as the second one and I thought if I made the two adjustments, one to the position of the catch and one to the position of the latch that all would be well. Nada, it still failed I still had to remove a small amount of metal on the face of the latch.
All in all the tolerances are too tight in my experience.

We liked the concept but I hadn't read anything about these not working in pre-fab cabinets when the shelves are movable. There would have to be major changes to the structure of the cabinets to make them secure enough for this use. We called the 800 number and verified there is that drawback. We returned them for a prompt refund. Appreciate it.

I've installed 30 of these latches now in two houses. The latches are high quality - I haven't had a single problem out of 30, and they install quickly and easily. The only complaint I have is about the little u-shaped foam install jigs - the two sided tape was too strong and tore up the foam pieces quickly. Fortunately I had a roll of less sticky two sided tape that let me get the job done without destroying any more of the foam pieces - I imagine making a roll of transparent 'Scotch' tape would work just as well. I haven't been through an earthquake yet, but I do sleep easier knowing that I've reduced the odds of my cabinets popping open and launching their contents if things start shaking.

They are installed now on 10 kitchen cabinet doors and hoping they will all latch when the big one strikes. Not being a handywoman it took awhile to install the first couple of sets. I like that the parts have tacky glue to help set them in One would really need the right drill bit to use on the tiny screws which btw are tough to handle if you have long nails.( I turned the project over to my son). Fairly simple instructions. I posted a question about a month ago on their site but have gotten no response yet

These things don't get in the way of normal use, but deploy to protect your contents when the quake hits. Haven't had a quake since install but am confident in the mechanism. Very easy to install, except they provide cheapo screws with no bite. I got more and did all my cupboards when I saw how well they work.

If you live in a quake zone, imagine the mess when all your cupboards vomit their contents all over the floor. Then get these. Now, the doors will only open an inch. You may lose a few glasses from clacking together, but not from being tossed across the room. And you are less likely to be hit by flying plates as you cower under the kitchen counter.

I am a veteran of the 1994 Northridge quake. I had been looking for a quake latch system that does not require two hands to open a cabinet door. There are some push latches which require a short push and then a pull to open. I'm not sure how well they would stand up to quake forces to keep the cabinet door closed.

ETC has apparently come up with a new approach to earthquake safety latches for cabinets - they are "automatic." You install a cabinet mounted swinging hook and a door mounted latch and then place the hook upright. In an earthquake, the hook swings forward engaging the latch. Both components are well secured to the cabinet and door and have room to move around so I feel confident that the system will keep the door closed in the series of strong motions and jolts seen in a quake. After installation, the cabinet door works just like it did before. One hand opening with no push required.

As icing on the cake, ETC has designed an installation system which makes alignment very easy. The two pieces have adhesive on them and you just push the hook holder into place on the cabinet where you want it. Then put a foam template/marker on the holder and shut the door. The template transfers to the door and you push the latch into position right under it. Then remove the template and attach each piece with two screws. Finally set the hook in the upright position. You are done until there is a quake. Then open with a finger between the door and the cabinet frame and reset the mechanism.

I am not easily given to enthusiasm for new products, but in my view, this design is quite ingenious and a real solution to a tough problem - preserving normal door operation until a latch is needed.
