After reading CD's negative review, I was a bit skeptical. However, I ordered one having seen that the seller was responsible with return information. I received mine today. I installed the battery, and tested it on several different vehicles; one with a known value of high moisture because the car had set outside for several years. I was pleasantly surprised that the fluid in my Rover showed <1% as I had just changed the brake lines and fluid (from a fresh container) last weekend. I tested on my wife's car, and again, <1% as I had expected. I tested the fluid in a car I have not operated for several years, and the red lights +4% lit.
This device is not exactly a substitute for lab analysis. The case is plastic, and it gives you the feeling of some typical Far East bit of electronic wizardry which will fail at the slightest provocation. This is the reason for my 4/5 rating. However, I plan to use it during general maintenance intervals on my cars, just as a cursory check of the brake fluid. The unit I received works as advertised. I consider this a useful tool, given the price.

I work in a large dealership. The first thing we do when we receive a car or truck in the service bays is to perform a detailed inspection of the vehicle. I bought this tool to do more than a quick look at brake fluid level and to see if the fluid was discolored over time. What we have found out to be true is vehicles with 30,000 miles, the tester shows 1% water content. 45,000 miles or so, the water content is 2%. 50,000 to 60,000 miles and the water content is 3% or higher. We annotate the water content on the inspection form and let the service writer or manager conduct an 'up sale'. The consistency of the results would indicate the tool is working correctly. This tool also helps to cover our backs from lawsuits because we tell the customer the status of their brake fluid. I am so glad I bought this tool. After one month it seems to working fine.

I normally flush the braking systems on my families cars every three years.i find newly flushed cars have the minimum lights lit and the cars nearing three years have red lights lit.its a good indicator of your fluids condition. generally speaking the color of fluid is also a indicator as it goes from clear or light amber to coffee color as it ages.I had a friend who never flushed his brakes (five year old car)have the brake light come on.turned out the balls inside his ABS control unit jammed with dirty fluid, cost him 1800 dollars to fix it.brake flushes where i live are under 100 dollars cheap insurance.

I discovered a problem with this unit. While testing new fluid it failed. What I found was that if only the very tips touched the fluid it was good. If the tips were submerged into the fluid it would fail. So to fix that problem I put heat shrink from radio shack on each probe exposing only 3/8 in. Of the tips. This prevents a false reading no matter how deep the probes are inserted. (See picture). The unit now gives new fluid a pass and pure water a fail. In between fluids also seem to be accurate. 2 stars because of the error from the factory. 5 stars after the fix.

I never realized brake fluid could wear out as this tester taught an old dog a new trick. After doing a complete brake job on my truck I just had that feeling that something was not quite right. The tester gave me a bad reading upon testing the old fluid (very old) so I pumped out and renewed the fluid. What a difference. I never thought renewing brake fluid could make such a difference. Thanks for such a great tool especially at the price.

I can confirm it works as I tried it on three cars with know brake fluid age and the old one showed 5%, the middle one showed 1% and the new one showed 0%.

The ultimate test would really be to start off in some new, clean brake fluid, but I don't have any. However, the brake fluid in my mom's car was tested at a local quick lube place recently and they said the moisture content was at 4%. It's actually the reason I bought this tester, because I don't trust those places, and sure enough I got a reading of 4%. Tested the fluid in my truck and it was bouncing between 1%-2%, which sounds about right since I had the fluid changed less than a year ago.

So really, I'd say this device is something that everyone should have. Whether you're a DIY'er who changes their own fluids or you take your vehicle(s) to a shop for someone else to change them and you want to make sure that they're being honest with you, the $20-ish you spend on this tester is a small and necessary investment.

Quick tip: When testing, make sure the probes are fully submerged to the point where the brake fluid touches the plastic to get the most accurate reading. When I only submerged the probes halfway in either vehicle, it was reading 1%-2% less.

I purchased this brake fluid tester after comparing several types of testers on the market. Price can range from less than $10 for test strips to over $150 for a professional test kit.

I live in the Pensacola Florida area, and the high humidity greatly impacts the life of brake fluid due to the hygroscopic nature of DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1 bake fluids (this is specifically a DOT4 fluid tester). In the past, I resorted to changing out the fluid every 12-18 months in order to combat the negative effects of high humidity. This interval essentially ensured the fluid was not water saturated, but the effort (especially on my Honda S2000) tended to be time consuming and messy, even when using a positive pressure bleeder. This repetitive cycle based on an educated guess was too ambiguous, and the sense of not knowing the actual condition of the fluid eventually drove me to invest in a fluid tester to dictate the appropriate time to change fluid based on the actual condition of the fluid, not by a relatively arbitrary time interval based on an educated guess.

I personally use ATE TYP200 fluid, which is currently the best DOT4 fluid readily available - for the broadest range of applications. I found through years of use that ATE TYP200 lasted longer than any of the other fluids I have used, and covered conditions ranging from light track use, severe hot weather use and in cold winter conditions. I've used TYP200 in ambient temperature ranges from -25F in Oklahoma to 129F in Bahrain with reliable, consistent and durable results.

I do not have professional brake fluid testing equipment, but I decided to sample a variety of brake fluids covering the spectrum of new to neglected, to see how well the tester would measure the differences between samples.
