I bought one of these EcoSpheres back in 1999 for my dad as a Christmas present (yes, 12 years ago!), and it is still going strong in 2011! Algae, shrimp, everything... When I say "with the right care" in the review title, don't mistake that to mean it really requires much of any -- but it surely helps that it is kept in the right light (the algae grows with more light & shrinks with less) and the right temperature.

The same results obviously cannot be guaranteed, but the one I bought has been well worth every penny and shows no signs of stopping -- so it is obviously possible. Very cool product...

**UPDATE: It's now a year and a half after I wrote the initial review and the shrimp is still kickin'... so that is now 13.5 years that it's been going strong. Not too bad.

10/10 +Shipping.
All shrimp made the journey out alive. The glass sphere made the journey all the way from Tucson, Arizona to Illinois in pristine condition.

10/10 +Coolness
My ecosphere came with 4 shrimp: 1 larger, reddish colored shrimp; 1 small, reddish colored shrimp; and 2 small, clear greyish colored shrimp. The larger shrimp is about 11mm large and the small ones are about 8mm large. This small ecosystem that you can keep on your desk does what it is intended to do. It is a pretty neat and unique item.

7/10 +Price
My purchase price was $43.27 plus $4.99 one day shipping for a total of $51.27 after tax. I must admit this is quite a lot of money for me to be spending on a desk decoration, but it is the coolest desk decoration out there... Also, no other aquatic sustainable ecosystem maker, if any, sells on Amazon, so I don't have any reference on what this thing should be priced.

0/10 -Teeth Clenching Action :(

10/10 +Maintenance
It just sits there and you don't have to clean it. WOW

3/10 +Buyer's Remorse
I want to justify buying an over glorified paper weight but for $50, I could have bought something a little more useful. However, I don't know what else would bring me the one of a kind pleasure to have 4 little crustaceans running amok in a silly glass sphere. Well, at least I only had 3 remorse out of 10 remorse for buying this :D

My EcoSphere came in today and was very well packaged. I bought the small sphere to have on my desk at work. It came with four shrimp and they are all swimming around and seem to be healthy. It is just the right size and the "globe" seems durable, not like a thin cheap glass. However, it is glass and therefore won't try and see how durable. I think this is a great office pet because now you do not have to trust co-workers to feed them. They take care of themselves.
I will up-date as time goes by.

I purchased a small Ecosphere as a birthday present for my dad. I presumed that the Ecosphere would be a kit, like Sea Monkeys: the box would include an empty glass sphere, some powder to mix with water, a little wooden branch, some dried algae that would come back to life, and a coupon to send off for the shrimp, which would not be included in the box.

Wrong.

The Ecosphere comes complete, with everything already inside, and sealed tight. You take it out of the box, and it's good to go. The shrimp are inside swimming around, the algae is in there, along with the little branch, some decorative gravel, and some little jewelry-like bits in the gravel.

So, if you buy one, plan ahead: You don't want to leave it tucked under the holiday tree for several days (or weeks!). Ideally, you'll want to get the sphere out of the box and into indirect sunlight the day it arrives or fairly soon after then.

That's what I'm doing--guiltily enjoying my gift to my dad because the party is still a couple of weeks away, so the sphere is out of the box and in some gentle light.

The Ecosphere itself is very, very cool. The 4 shrimp are pretty tiny, maybe as long as my pinky fingernail is wide. But the glass sphere acts like a lens and makes them look much bigger. The shrimp are pretty active a lot of the time, zooming around chasing each other, and are fun to watch. The gravel, sparkly bits, and branch have a simple, organic elegance to them. I could see the Ecosphere being a very classy--if distracting--desk accessory.

Would you enjoy seeing a death trap? I would not, so I created a little better home as I best I could care for them.
Couple weeks ago, I saw the link to this intriguing ecosystem from a friend's facebook post and immediately so interested getting these little cute shrimps home. I read couple 1 star reviews and gets the hint that rather than a self sustaining ecosystem, it is simply a death trap. With the benefit of doubt, I researched more about the science behind ecosystem. The brutal fact became clear as I learned more: Manufactures trap a very unique shrimp specie that has very longevity up to 20 years in a eco sphere that cuts their live span to a fraction of couple years, which is still very long compare to what people expect out of a pet, and call it eco sphere. Sorry, there is absolutely nothing eco about it. it just these shrimp can survive the harsh condition of no food for a long time. They will get smaller in size as time pass and they will not reproduce in this sealed glass environment. Additionally, these shrimps prefer in shade rather than in the light, this eco sphere leave the shrimp no place to hide out at all...I will not continue to bore you with more brutal fact as there are already some detailed comments about it and some simple research will tell you more than what you would like to know.
So... I still really want the shrimp, but not the death trap part. I decided to set up a little fish bowl myself to welcome the shrimps. I do not have the time to care for a large fish tank, filters and all that, but I know I can care for a small fish bowl. When I say care, there is really not much after the initial set up. Here is what I got in the picture:
- 1.
