I can't bring myself to give 5 stars to underwear, but I do want to endorse the product. Over the past 2 years, I have conducted a "brief" experiment (I know, that was bad, sorry), testing Calvin, Hanes, Jockey and Polo briefs, and I have to say that Polo has been the clear winner in terms of fit, comfort and durability. Not only does its cotton feel the nicest out of the package, but its elastic has held up best of the lot, which to me is the most important factor.

A product I can tolerate

I knew going in that these briefs would be a bit small since they're not "size 38" but rather "size large", which covers 36-38. Plus I had to settle for mid-rise instead of full-rise. Just try to find full-rise briefs these days! It's hard enough to find even a mid-rise since it seems manufacturers are targeting 18-30 year olds with low-rise, hip huggers, and thongs.

But what REALLY surprised me was the lack of mass. Each brief was rolled into a bundle no larger than a cannoli. All four together were stuffed into a case the size of a romance paperback.

We live in a profits-driven age of cost reduction, so I suppose Ralph Lauren has found the perfect formula for men's briefs. First cut down the product line by switching from numbered sizes to S/M/L. Then reduce the product dimensions and fabric weight until the customer is ALMOST dissatisfied, but has no other options but to buy the product. So I award RL 4 stars instead of 3 because at least they have a product I can tolerate. The other brands play the same games and I actually WAS dissatisfied with their offerings.

10/2/15: I forgot to mention, this manufacturer is among a vanishing group which still sews elastic into the leg openings. Bravo! For that I guess they actually do deserve 4 stars.

I have Purchased other Brands and for year wore the JCPenny brand but over the years the quality and fit has taken a turn for the worse. I love the cotton feel of these RL they are very comfortable and the waist band along with the overall underwear has withstood the many washes. If you are looking for comfortable, durable, underwear these are the best I have come across.

Beware of this vendor!!!

Advertised as "4 pack in madison heather" and photo showed medium grey (heather). They sent a 4 pack with 3 black and madison grey. When the vendor was contacted they said they would send a return label but none sent. This is false advertizing. Amazon should NOT put up with this type vending. Send what your vendor advertises and displays in photos!!!

Good quality but sit a bit too high.

I had never worn Polo briefs before buying these but I have owned Polo Ralph Lauren shirts and pants for a few years and have always been happy with them. In regards to underwear, now that I'm 27 years old I stick with the same brands, color and style that I've worn for years...specifically Hanes or Fruit of the Loom WHITE BRIEFS. And except for a short 5-6 month period during my sophomore year of college when I tried to make Hanes white boxer briefs work, I've never owned or worn anything but classic white briefs. Even today my underwear drawer contains only white briefs, or a "sea of tighty whities" as my fiancee calls it. I'll freely admit that I all but refuse to wear anything else because I believe a great pair of white briefs to be the best underwear available.

Unfortunately they brands I normally wear don't last nearly as long as I'd like them to, so I finally decided to buy a higher quality brand of underwear. While I was in Dillard's one day browsing the men's underwear section, I asked the young sales guy what brand of briefs he recommended. He responded by saying that he was currently wearing Polo Ralph Lauren briefs and that they were "simply the best". He picked up a package of Polo mid rise white briefs off the shelf and handed them to me, which I then bought. When I got home and tried them on I was impressed with how much thicker they were than my other brands. They give all the necessary brief-style support, they fit snugly, and are tight without being constricting. As well, they are comfortable and feel really soft around my crotch and bottom. One out of four too small

These fit as expected except one pair was significantly smaller. I sent and email to Amazon and no response. Basically got three pair for the price of four. The three that fit are great! Wish Amazon paid attention to emails sent to them about products.

Tighty whities
