holds beads well, but OMG it stinks

These mats come in small and large; I got one of each. They both hold seed beads just great, even upside down! I've not tried larger beads on them.

My preferred beading surface is a Velux bead mat. I've also used Tacky Bob, which I don't like because the beads stick to it so strongly that I find it difficult to pick them up on the needle. This mat is sticky enough to hold the beads very well indeed, but I can still get them on the needle without a fight. It should be great for on an airplane, in the car, or if your pet believes that your lap belongs to him or her regardless of what you may be trying to do.

However, if, like me, you are sensitive to odors, you may hate this thing. It stinks. Worse than a room full of stink bugs. Worse than your dog when it comes back from the woods after rolling in bear scat. Worse than skunks. I can't decide if it smells rancid or like rotten meat, or what. I tried washing it, but the smell came right back. In fact, I hung it on a bathroom towel rod to dry, and when I came back up the steps, I could smell it from 12 feet away at the top of the steps. Seems to me that BeadSmith could have done something about that odor. That said, just like the folks who worked in the tanneries and slaughter houses, your nose will get used to anything after a while.

this is great to keep beads off the floor. when they no longer stick, just run under water and its back to new again. I do not use it for seed bead products because the tiny beads are too difficult to pick up on this and you cannot scoop beads onto a needle, but other than that it is great

WONDERFUL product!

Unless you are an extremely well organized beader (or really even if you ARE) this is an absolutely wonderful product. Not every single bead placed on this mat will hang on like velcroed but most of them will. Since I always seem to end up working on projects from my recliner (nothing like a Lazy Boy in your old age!) it is a Godsend! I know longer have beads falling in the cracks of the chair and or rolling and bouncing off the floor! I pour a few of whatever I'm working on and like magic they actually stay put!!!

Useful, but slightly defective

I was really excited for this bead mat, and it's pretty good. Definitely has some stick to it, holds everything in place. There was a slight smell to mine, as other reviewers mentioned, but I find it quite mild and not overwhelming at all.

Unfortunately, there are patches in my bead mat (fairly small overall, but still present) where air bubbles seem to have gotten trapped in the mat substance during manufacture, and they're squisher than the rest of the mat. You can see them when the mat is held to the light. Said air bubbles mostly don't break the surface, but I suspect that with rough usage or over time, the surface over the mat may be punctured and they could cause problems.

Must-Have Bead Mat for Bead Workers

If you do a lot of beading, especially with seed beads, you know how hard it can be to keep them from rolling around and escaping. Problem solved with this amazing product. It is quite sticky without leaving residue on your beads/stones. We have a small and annoying bird who flies around the house in search of trouble -- even the downdraft from his (condor-sized-in-his-mind) wings don't blow the beads off the mat. I have the smaller size as well; it's a good lap mat that is portable. This larger version is also double-sided. Unlike its smaller cousin, it comes with a bead design board with slightly recessed pockets on one side. Each side has a sheet of plastic to cover when not in use. Dust and hair will stick to the surfaces as well as beads do. However, it is easily rinsed off and is as good as new. I like the covers because I can put them over the beads when I'm away from my work table. It keeps inquisitive beaks and debris and such from falling onto the mat.

Edited to add: After writing this review, I noticed that other customers had indicated that the mat has a bad odor. It's possible that the manufacturer addressed this issue. My mat has only a faint "new plastic" odor that isn't bad at all.

Great for holding beads, bad smell

This bead mat is great for holding onto beads but I do have to say the chemical smell of this mat is VERY strong. The smell faded after about 2 months and a couple of washings.

Great item. Wasn't sure I'd like this when I saw what it was made out of, but it works fine. I was expecting the same material as my small bead mat which blue and pretty sticky. This one has the markings like a nonsticky beadboard which is very handy, but not as sticky. I think it will be great.

I make jewelry and like to lay out my necklace designs before I string them. This sticky bead mat helps me do just that. I like it because the beads stay where you put them and don't roll away. I also like the fact that it has 2 sides. One side has groves to help you place your layout on and the other side is just flat so that if you have beads to separate, they won't roll away. I also like the fact that all you have to do is wash it and it becomes sticky again. It's a well thought out product and I will use for a bunch of projects in the future.
