After extensive research, I decided on this bowl as my first purchase.
The bowl is fantastic, with an air of antiquity, easily distinguished as hand-made, and the likes of a much more expensive bowl. The sound is superb; I am able to extract two distinct sounds; low harmonic (~500Mz) and high harmonic (~650Hz).

On a well deserved note: if you have the choice, order from HinkyImports. The reason I am singling them out is because there was a mix-up with my order, I called the number on the business card they provided in the package, and they quickly corrected the discrepancy (Thank you Dawn!). I did not expect such good customer service. And no, I do not work for them.

It's common for people to post passionately when their order goes bad, I wanted to give credit and post passionately because my order went great!

WOW!! where to start. First, it comes from nepal and I got it in 4 days, yes 4 days. I can't get a letter to my mom a few hundred miles away in 4 days.
Next, Great price for what it is. Next, LOOKS WOW- You don't think it will look as nice as it does. You have to like the unique look of handmade things, this looks handmade, sounds outstanding and is a wonderful addition to our home altar. Next, you can use this two ways, for a harmonic meditation or to signal the beginning, end and segments of your meditation. For either purpose it is LOUD. I also like that the striker makes both male and female sounds, so altogether you can obtain 4 distinct sounds from the bowl. I am no musician, but I can tell when something is ringing true and this IS. It says it is tuned F and my widget for tuning that takes batteries (so it has to work) says that's what I am ringing. LOVE LOVE LOVE this bowl. I also love that I will have it for many years to come as it is my 10th anniversary present from my oh so fantastic husband.

I have been waiting and waiting . . . about three days to receive this product. I read a lot of the reviews and took note that there may be issues with making the bowl "sing". But before I read the reviews, I watched a video on a Buddhist website that spoke about how to hold the bowl at an angle, the motion of moving the wand around the outside of the bowl is not a wrist motion but a WHOLE arm motion and you can't "clasp" the bottom of the bowl or it will mute the sound, it has to just lay on your outstretched palm. So before I even read the reviews I knew there was a lot to making these things "sing". I got it today, ripped open the package, I am totally new to trying this. I have never used a bowl before, thus the research beforehand. As video instructed, not knowing how much pressure to apply at first, the bowl makes a beautiful sound. I know I will need to practice . . . A LOT! But the sound is gorgeous. The photo shows a shinier version of the bowl, it is not that bright, it is a dull brass look, but I like it, looks handmade as promised. The cushion is a round burgundy color I have really small hands so it is hard to hold flat on the palm of the hand without grasping. BUT I did find that even though it is large in size for a woman, I set the bowl on the cushion it comes with and it still sang so long as I had enough pressure and was moving the entire arm. I think this will be a great addition to my meditation practice. It is beautiful, sounds good and I am very pleased with the purchase!!

Love this singing bowl! Have you ever fallen in love with a new object to the point that you want to take it to bed with you? (This only happens to me with musical instruments … which this is.) Ok, maybe I'm the only crazy one; but, I left this on the bed beside me last night. The nice thing about that was that I was able to easily strike it three times as soon as I woke up. What a wonderful sound to start my day!

I've attached a photo of my bowl after a couple hours of polishing to remove most of the tarnish. Some might think the tarnish add charms to the bowl, but I prefer it shiney. Also, polishing off the tarnish makes the surface smoother, which makes it easier to get it to sing because there's less friction between the mallet and the edge of the bowl.

Look, I am not a singing bowl expert, but the bowl I got is possibly an antique, which sells for hundreds if not thousands of dollars on some singing bowl websites. The reason these are being sold here, possibly, is due to the uneven nature of the bowls. Folks, please take a careful look at the photo above. My bowl looks very similar - with the black tarnish on the inside rim and pits on the outside. This is what makes this bowl great!

I cringe whenever I read people talk about getting rid of the patina or using sandpaper to "fix" the bowl. A singing bowl will mellow the more you play it (due to metal fatigue) and you can also try a different striker/mallet. Mine sings but it is a deep low tone that only gets going when I go fast around the bowl. I play my bowls by striking them anyway usually.

For the price - I got this from Warehouse Deals from a return by someone who clearly did not appreciate all the beautiful irregularities - I have gotten a bowl with real CHARACTER that sounds lovely when struck. If you want a more even bowl, PLEASE buy a modern bowl made on a lathe and not an old hand-hammered bowl. Don't destroy what might be an antique (if not now, then in a few decades)!
