The leather is super comfortable and these are a pleasure to wear.
I bought my true size and have been pretty happy with the fit.
They provide good traction on the walls and they fit well.

After trying on several different brands of climbing shoes at the local REI and EMS, I purchased these through Amazon, because only Amazon had my size. As I've only been climbing for a few weeks, I was not interested in a hyper-aggressive shoe with a sharp downturn and a tiny toe box. That said, if you're climbing 5.11 routes and beyond, maybe you'll want something more aggressive. For me, however, these are great. In the end, it came down to a choice between this - the Scarpa Helix, and the La Sportiva Nago, and I ended up going with these due to the *slightest* advantage in comfort. (I would not hesitate to purchase the La Sportiva Nago, if the Scarpa Helix didn't exist.) My fiancee went with the La Sportiva Nago (women's version, of course), and she's pleased with them, so your mileage may vary.

First, let me describe the shoe: All of the shoe is leather except for the sole, the pull strap on the heel, the stitching, and the laces. Stitching is remarkably sturdy-looking throughout, and if memory serves, the shoe is stamped "Made in Italy" on the inside. Being an Italian shoe, sizing is European... (with US equivalents) but get this... for me, comparing the Scarpa Helix to the La Sportiva Nago (another Italian shoe), I was a FULL SIZE BIGGER in the Scarpa Helix... so keep that in mind when ordering. (Just to be clear, put a US 10 Scarpa Helix sole to sole next to a US 9 La Sportiva Nago, and they will be pretty much identical.)

Seriously - you are probably thinking "This guy isn't buying shoes that are tight enough," but you're wrong.

I bought a pair of these about six months ago. Some thoughts:

    * They're designed for wider feet. I have long, somewhat narrow feet, and I find the sole a bit too wide. You can partially correct with the laces, but you'll lose a little confidence on smaller holds.

    * The heel doesn't slip. I chose them over La Sportiva's Naga shoe for this reason.

    * The leather expands significantly. My in-store size (10.5; I wear an 11.5 street shoe) was almost unbearable to stand on for any length of time. After six or eight climbing sessions, the shoes expanded to be the ideal length. I can wear them for about fifteen minutes at a time before I want to chuck them off. Here's how to size a new pair: extend your foot to a ballet point. If there's any clearance or looseness at all at the tip of the shoe, it's too big. The toe box for a new leather shoe should feel very snug with your foot in a point and very uncomfortable with your foot flat. Go up a half-size if the shoe is synthetic.

    * The rubber is decently sticky, not great, and the inside edge isn't that sharp. At a gym 5.10 level, I found them adequate. At 5.11/5.12 with thin holds, there isn't enough feel to be confident.

    * I've managed to wear through the rubber in front of both toes. I don't scramble up routes and rarely do any sort of foot dragging. I retired my previous pair of shoes undamaged after climbing for twice as long. This shoe will be totally unforgiving of poor foot technique.

On balance, not a bad shoe, and significantly stickier and more comfortable than the gym rental shoes. It's definitely for mid-range use though. If you're a novice climber, you're liable to wear through the soles quickly. And if you're accelerating to the harder routes, you'll probably want a sharper toe.

Superb value in climbing shoes. The toe of my pair started delaminating after the first two or three climbs, but hasn't gotten worse in the following few months. Not the most aggressive, but certainly the most comfortable I've worn.

took my feet probably 2 months to get fully use to. I climb two to three times a week and these have so far lived up to my expectations. I typically wear a mens size 11.5 in regular shoes and I purchased a mens size 10.5 but climbing shoes are typically supposed to be much tighter of a fit then regular shoes, plus no socks. If I made the purchase again I would have only gone a half size smaller than my regular shoe size. Climbing shoes are hard to buy online, I tried this model on in a local store before making my purchase here, kind of feel guilty about it but money is money ant they where cheaper here.

For a mid-level climbing shoe, they are solid all-around performers.

I should probably go with something a little more aggressive, but I have been sticking with the Helix. I know what to expect and they fit my foot well overall.

On this latest order, this pair feels slightly small even though I ordered a 1/2 size larger (44.5) than my last pair (44). The last pair seemed to shrink over time - I had to get shoe insert to stretch them out. (Yeah, I know climbing shoes are supposed to be small, but they shrunk over time to a point of being crushingly tightly.)

I'm writing this review because I took a really rough fall with these shoes. It was partially climbing with a pack much heavier than usual, but I also felt that the rubber of these shoes is not nearly as sticky as several other pairs that I have, especially on granite and slab. I originally got them on recommendation from an REI salesperson to hold me over while my other shoes were getting resoled. I decided to try them on a multi-pitch since they are pretty comfortable and found that they are nowhere near as good as my Tenayas. I think it's important to know what you would buy these for. They are definitely a beginner shoe, not a lot of edging and like I mentioned the rubber was terrible on slab. They are comfortable, so I now loan these out to friends who want to try climbing for the first time in the gym or outside. I also like the look of them.
