Let's get a few things straight from the start - I love effects pedals. I love the idea of a handcrafted boutique pedal (and have owned a few), and I'll also play the mass-produced BOSS and Ibanez stuff. And if you put foreign/no-name brand in front of me, but the pedal is made well and sounds GOOD, I'll play that too. All you need to know is that this pedal is well-constructed and sounds darn good for 40 dollars.

Joyo is a Chinese company that essentially has makes their own form factor (a heavy-duty metal box with an MXR-like button switcher), and then clones/mimics/copies circuitry of popular boutique pedals that cost anywhere from $100 to $250. And they've figured out how to ship them to the U.S. and sell them for $40 to $60 each. I've recently discovered these pedals, and if money/pedalboard space were no issue, there's probably 8 to 12 of them I'd like to own.

The "star" of the Joyo lineup, however, is arguably the JF-02 Ultimate Drive. This pedal got some notoriety a few years back when an American company bought them in bulk, repainted them, and tried to sell them for almost $200. The fact that they thought they could get that much for it tells you something about the quality.

The pedal this is supposedly clone off of is the Fulltone OCD Overdrive, a boutique pedal that came out several years ago, and usually sells from around $150. I own that pedal, and I've done a side by side comparison on my pedal board. And while tone is EXTREMELY subjective, I'm not sure that I wouldn't go with the Joyo Ultimate Drive in a blind test. While the 3-knob, Lo/Hi switch are clearly inspired by the Fulltone OCD, the pedals actually sound quite different. (Shhhh.. don't tell people about this overdrive. Don't tell them it's practically the exact same sound you can get out of another Obsessive drive pedal at a fraction of the cost. If you leave positive reviews, people will catch on, and the secret will be out, and us guitarists need our secrets!)

I put this in place of an Ibanez tube screamer on my pedalboard and took it out for a night in a club. Once I had it dialed in, fairly quickly, this became the "go to" overdrive for the night. My fulldrive, my Carl Martin Heavy Drive and my zendrive all got ignored for the evening. Gobs of gain, sustain, the low end stays intact, you can boost your highs if you like. If other Joyo pedals are like this one they are worth every cent.

The Joyo Ultimate Overdrive is simply a great pedal. Tone adjustment is precise. The bright switch is an added bonus. Having that in place lends to greater tones and harmonics from this pedal. Construction is first rate and there is absolutly no hum, hiss, loss of signal, nor any excessive coloring of your signal. In short you get 100% drive that has a very broad range to work from. Through a tube amp it just extends the sound to levels that were not possible using the amp's gain alone. Impressive! I can clearly see why so many have stated that this pedal is so good. It just is. I'm not one to argue over perfection, and neither should anyone else that plays guitar and cares about their tone and gear. This one is a winner, hands down!

And I'm not a new player either, been at it for nearly 5 decades now. I know tone, and have had great, and not so great gear. This one is a keeper! It handles everything from easy overdrive to nearly all out metal (not a metal pedal though) but it gets that drive from those huge amps of the 70's right on the money. Versatile. Smooth. Easy to dial in. What's not to like here? Forget your "boutique" pedals and save tons of money and get a great pedal.

What's not to love? Right out of the box observations; The case is a heavy duty coated metal possibly anodized aluminum or a powder coated stainless. The manufacturer states, "Material: Aluminum alloy with stoving vanish (sic)" Definitely not plastic EXCEPT for the chintzy battery compartment cover. The potentiometers are first rate; they are made of a non ferrous metal with just the right amount of stiffness when you turn them. The frequency HI - LOW toggle switch is the best quality; you can just feel and hear the quality when flipping it up and down. And, the toggle switch is protected, surrounded by 3 burly soldiers named Gain, Tone and Level. Just like the OCD, of which this pedal supposedly is a clone and has been sufficiently tested and compared and 'proven' by others. Some very expensive pedal manufacturers leave that skinny little toggler right next to the KICK SWITCH!! In fact, I almost bought the hot tubes nano.

The bypass switch has just the right feel, as well. So the knobs themselves are plastic but I took one off to see how they are put together. There is a metal set screw into a threaded metal insert that is embedded in the knob.

The performance is an overdrive with a capital OVER. The manufacturer states, "It is intermediate between distortion and overdrive.." For my taste, I run the Gain at less than 9:00, the Level just under 10:00, and the Tone between 1:00 and 3:00 when I play my Les Paul. I haven't tried this box with my Telecaster yet. Plenty of gain for any shredders I predict.

This is not the first Chinese pedal I have bought (I will leave the moralistic guilts to others as well), but it is by far the best made, even better that some USA made boxes. That is, if the Joyo Ultimate Drive endures. Only time will tell on that. In the event of any failure I will do a follow up. But so far I would say for 30 bucks this is the bargain of the year.
