This is not the first flour keeper to grace our kitchen. In the past, I have used those beautiful Italian hinged glass jars with rubber gaskets. They were pretty, but getting flour out resulted in a counter top snowstorm. I had some inexpensive plastic ones from The Container Store, that did the job, but didn't offer a nice tight seal and after using them for a year they didn't stay closed as well as they did when we got them... I have used plastic food storage containers with lids with silicone gaskets. Those worked well, but easily as messy as the glass jars and the other flour bag containers.

So, we are weary in this battle of keeping our flour fresh (we do use it quickly, but as we live in SW Florida between the swamp and the gulf, we do have entirely too many critters just lining up for us to open a door or window). Thankfully, I think that the battle has been won with the addition of the Progressive International Flour Keeper to our food storage arsenal.

The container itself is as attractive as other plastic containers. In other words, I won't be leaving this out on the counter (like my much loved glass jars). It seems sturdy enough and is BPA free. There is a clear gasket recessed into the lid and a latch on the front, that can be opened with one hand if need be, though my arthritic hands did struggle with the latch, perhaps the gasket will be "worn in" and closing will be easier- but it will definitely keep the critters out, and I blame my hands and not this vessel.

The built in leveler is pretty freaking awesome and as I have a rocky relationship with recipes (I like to experiment) and don't always stop to measure, particularly with bread doughs (yeast dough... I tend to go by feel to decide when it is "just right").Read more ›

When this 1st arrived I was pleased with the weight of the contained in that it is sturdy and will stand up to lots of use. The seal is good. However, the lever is not removable and makes cleaning difficult. Also, it is dishwasher safe, but how to stack in the dishwasher so the hinged lid stays open and all the water/soap/cleaning solutions exit the leveler and the recesses of the lid? That is a real problem. This also makes hand washing a little tricky for getting every part dry before adding the flour.

My other problem is with the volume. It does hold 5# of flour; however you cannot use the leveler until it is about 1/2 empty. 5# of flour fills the container to the top.

I had this item washed and thrown away the paper that came with it, so I cannot return it. So I will use it until I find something better.

It is too pricey for the value, in my opinion.

This container exceeded my expectations out of the box. Much to my surprise, it's sturdy and well made, thicker plastic than your average storage container. The lid snaps tightly, which ensures confidence that it'll keep critters and moisture out. It holds a 5 lb bag of flour perfectly. The one thing that really bothers me is that the leveler is not removable; it annoys me when I'm cleaning it out and I've scraped my hand/arm while cleaning, probably because I'm rushing. I'd rather be able to slip the entire bag of flour into the container instead of dumping it into the container. With the leveler locked into place, it isn't possible. I'm not a fan of red either; clear matches any decor.

This is a very straightforward and well-made product. The plastic is strong - much stronger than average plastic food saving containers, but not quite as rigid as a brita pitcher. Most of it is clear and seems like the type that will stay clear. The sides are "smoked" - slightly textured - presumably for the non-slip properties.

The rubber seal seems great and it takes the slightest bit of pressure to close, making one confident the seal is doing its job. The hinge is a metal rod enclosed in plastic, which is a good thing for lasting strength. The rectangular prism shape is good for both storage and allowing you to get in and scoop without anything in the way. The leveler is a nice touch.

The only thing I'd change is to have other accent colours available - you know, so if you have a kitchen full of "cobalt blue", you can add to that rather than detract.

While the container secures well and I enjoy the measuring cup leveler, the container isn't big enough to hold an entire bag of flour without spilling everywhere and making the leveler all but impossible to use. Had this fit a whole bag of flour comfortably, I would have given it 5 stars.

The grips on both sides makes this item easy to maneuver around the kitchen. The hinged lid also allows you to open and close the container very easily, ensuring that the contents remain fresh. It seems that this container is more sanitary than some other containers with air holes,etc. The concept of the leveler is smart, and practical-no more looking around for a separate implement to level off your sugar or flour. The size is perfect for a 5 lb bag of sugar. I will definitely buy another one for flour to have a matching set. Lastly, since the item is rectangular, it fits nicely in the pantry, as opposed to a round container. And since the item has a sturdy and straight top, you could store something on top of the container. Some other containers have bowed lids which make this impossible. Great product!
