Here's the secret Sparky:

Don't try to use these solar maintainers as battery chargers. If you first charge your battery to the recommended 12.5 to 13.2 volts, these units will maintain that charge rate if exposed to regular sunshine.

If you put a solar "charger" on a dead battery, it won't dependably raise the voltage to that 12.5 to 13.2 volts, and the battery will "memorize" that reduced charge level and never again take a full charge.
Your battery is now history!

Another tip.
If you are going to use the included cigarette lighter plug to keep the battery in your vehicle charged, make certain that lighter socket isn't "switched", meaning if you shut-off your ignition the lighter plug goes dead. The lighter circuit must be "hot" whether the ignition is on or not for the charger/maintainer to do its job. If the lighter is shut-off when you take the key out of the ignition, the charge circuit is shunted and you're not charging ANYTHING.

Respecting these caveats will keep your battery in top shape, and YOU a happy camper!

We drive a truck over the road and are required to have a personal vehicle parked at our company HQ. When we go home we drive our truck home and use our other vehicle to get around. This causes us to leave our '98 Dodge Durango (parked in Georgia) for 3 - 6 weeks at a time without starting it. When we do we use it to go get something to eat and back to work so it does not get driven enough to give the batteries a good charge. We purchased this, along with the Schumacher SPC-7A 12 Volt Solar Charge Controller, after having to jump start our vehicle after leaving it for 8 weeks. We use thin window shades (with Fairies on them) and put the Solar Charger on the dash. It charges just fine even though it is not in direct sunlight. After being parked for 4 weeks, we put a multi-meter on the battery and it read 12.3 volts..started right up. Now we are thinking about buying another one for our Car in Florida! Hope this helps.

This item works well and puts out quite a good amount of electricity even in non ideal lighting. You'll want the charge controller with this one if you intend to use it as a constant 12V battery trickle charger. I think this large one has the ability to overcharge, especially on very sunny days. The charge controller will prevent overcharge.

This device did not provide a battery charge used with a Schumacher Solar charge controller. There is no real good way to test or check the unit for proper operation. A fully charged dual battery on a Silverado truck still discharged as before using this solar charger

My husband LOVED this, as we got it for him for fathers day. Since he is an electrical engineer he was immediately testing it and said it had great output and quickly got a charge on it. Now he's figuring out MANY applications and uses he can develop with it in addition to his boat. I think I will have to get another now!

Can't say more than that, it does what it is suppose to do and keeps the battery charged. No more worries about dead battery after long periods of storage. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend, but get the controller to avoid batter burn out.

I bought this Schumacher solar battery charger to keep my F150 battery in top condition. I seldom drive the pickup, and have had to replace the original battery far too early, having run it 'dry' on several occasions. I'm expecting that the solar charger, used faithfully, will keep the battery in top charge and give longer working life. I've bought a number of Schumacher 'trickle' and 10 amp chargers over the years, and if they fil me it seems to be from abuse or neglect on my part rather than design failure. I hope for the same luck from this solar unit.

I got the matching Schumacher charge controller to use with this solar panel to avoid possibly overcharging my car's battery. The two worked perfectly and kept the battery properly charged while I was away for several months. I actually didn't expect it to work - I expected to return to find a discharged or destroyed battery, so I was very surprised and pleased when that didn't happen. Isn't it crazy that it's come to this? That you celebrate when a product does only what it's supposed to do?
