Wife needed large amount for a project, but small skeins of DMC at local craft store were quite varied in color.
So I bought 2 cones at different times. Both arrived okay, in padded envelopes. No color variance noted between cones, but they were from same lot.

DMC cotton embroidery floss is the floss that I use for almost all of my counted cross stitch projects. I like the consistency of the material and color. I like that it is easily divisible and that most projects call for the floss by their color numbers. I have bought a number of DMC colors on the cone instead of only on skeins (though I do buy both.) I like the cone if I am going to do a project that uses a lot of the single color and also if it is a color that I use all the time.

I store my cones in my craft room closet so that light doesn't get to them. With that much floss, it is important to maintain the color by reducing any chance of sun-fading. If you don't have a closet to store them in, I have used a dark tablecloth in the past to cover up my stash of floss.
