I purchased this at a grocery store, and although undamaged and in good condition, I found the compass useless. The protractor works fine, but the compass' locking mechanism design is non-functional, and renders the compass non-functional as well. And as pointed out in another review, the pencil holder is also poorly designed. For a child the compass should prove to be nothing but frustrating.

We should have read the other reviews before buying this compass - it is indeed a waste. It does not stay in place, so in order to make a circle one has to tape the thing in place. For any work that needs arcs / circles of more than one radius, you need to remove the tape, adjust the compass, and retape it each time. We are going to have to find a better one.

Like others have said the compass is worthless. The pencil cannot be tightened in the holder and slips easily. The radius also cannot be secured. I had hoped this compass would work for simple high school geometry constructs but right out of the package it is a lemon.

Stay away from this compass. I bought one in Walmart. The clip that holds the pencil is not a clip- its just decoration and the pencil will slip out each and every time. This product is a SHAM!

They do get loose, but it is easy to tighten down the screw so that it will hold its width (I might try a drop of Loc-tite to see if that will help). We have not had trouble with the pencil not staying in...both the compass and the protractor have held up well to fidgety high school students, intent on seeing what it takes to break them.
