Open the lid of its black box and you know that this Coast A25 LED Flashlight is no plastic bargain bin sale special from your local hardware store. Take it out of the box, and its heft and solid stainless steel construction let you know immediately that it's one serious flashlight. Here's what I've found so far:

Likes:

+ Excellent build quality; stainless steel, good O-rings, recessed lens, sealed head
+ Single button operation on tail cap; high, strobe, and low output modes
+ One-hand focusing; no fumbling in emergencies, even with gloves
+ Weather-resistant; sealed by O-rings to keep water out
+ Uses 4 X AAA batteries; first set included, works with Ni-MH rechargeables
+ Nylon holster included; has Velcro and snap belt closures

Dislikes:

- High, strobe, and low output mode sequences

Had looked at the Coast HP7 High Performance LED Flashlight earlier, and found that it was similar in some ways to the Coast A25. The HP7 has a black aluminum casing, making it about three ounces lighter, but in output and range, the two seem to be fairly close.

First Impressions:

The Coast A25 LED flashlight comes in a black presentation-type box and has good foam protection inside. Within the box are the flashlight, four AAA alkaline batteries, a simple one-page instruction sheet, a product brochure (with a special offer), a robust holster in the bottom of the box, and a simple small lanyard.Read more ›

The Coast A25 LED Flashlight is a solid compact size LED flashlight that works quite well for its size and has a excellent focusing feature. It looks great in its stainless steel case but costs a bit more than some comparable flashlights.

Note that where appropriate I have made comparisons to other smaller high quality LED flashlights that I have owned for a while, in particular the Coast HP7 High Performance Focusing 251 Lumen LED Flashlight.

The Coast A25 is a very solid stainless steel flashlight measuring about 5.5" long and 1.5" in diameter. It runs on 4 AAA batteries (I am now using NiMH rechargables such as Sanyo NEW 1500 Eneloop 4 Pack AAA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries). The "focusing" feature allows you to adjust the beam between narrow and wide by moving the head of the HP7 back and forth by about 0.3". The on-off is a push button on the rear of the flashlight - turning on/off/on cycles between low power (44 lumens), high power (226 lumens), and high power strobe light. A soft carrying case is included with the A25.

As with other Coast lights I've looked at, the beam focusing feature of the A25 worked remarkably well. I've had other focusing beam flashlights that showed significant light or dark rings at either end of their zoom range (or both), but at both flood and spot settings the A25 disperses the light evenly.

The A25 is part of the Coast "Professional" line, but is very similar to the "High Performance" Coast HP7.Read more ›

No matter how enthusiastic I am about a new purchase, I try to hold off and use it for a while before writing a review. I liked this flashlight the moment I unboxed it and clicked it on, and now, after a couple of weeks using it, I can say it is an excellent tool, great for anybody who needs uniform, bright light in a small, ergonomic package.

The first thing you will notice, even before turning this on, is the solid, super-rugged, well finished build quality.

When adjusted properly, the light from this flashlight is amazingly "smooth," meaning that it doesn't have the usual rings of lighter and darker areas, or a distracting, darker center pont where you need the light most. The light is uniform from center to perimeter when you position the sliding head all the way down (towards your hand). This is extremely important when you need to clearly see details in a jumbled setting, say, where there are lots of boards, pipes, and wires.

Take this morning, for example. I had to check for a leak in our attic crawlspace, way at the opposite end of the house from the scuttle hole. For the first time, I felt completely comfortable up there, as the bright, clean light from the Coast A25 lit my way without distractions. When I got to the section of pipe I was checking, I did not have to keep moving the flashlight to see clearly, to get the brightest part of the light where I needed it. The whole area was more than bright enough, and I was able to get in, inspect, and get out much faster and more comfortably than ever.

The strobe effect works very well, and I'd like to have it if stuck on a the shoulder of a road or in some other scenario where you have to get people's attention.
