Awesome pack for serious hikers

This is an awesome pack for anyone who loves to hike with their dog! I have researched and bought different packs over the last couple of years and this is by far the best and worth the money! One feature I really like that I have not found on other packs is that the packs/saddlebags DETACH from the harness. This makes it super easy to put on and take off when the pup's pack is loaded up. The harness is also nice enough to be used on its own. I also like the harness design, other packs with harnesses are not as well designed. I do not use the water bladders, but they are a nice feature if you want that extra. I hike quite a bit with my 116 lb Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and she loves her pack. The design also positions the pack appropriately just behind the dog's shoulders where it should go.

My 2nd Palisades pack - new model has "issues"

I wore out my old Palasides and was so pleased with the quality, ordered a new one. Here's my issues:
1. They did away with the velco pieces that secured the saddlebags to the belly strap. Instead there is a 1/3" plastic snap that must be depressed to release. Yes, it's 1/3" - so tiny that you need to use your fingernail as your fingertip won't work. This is going to be an issue when wearing gloves or trying to get the pack off a wiggly dog in a hurry. And you HAVE to unbuckle these or you can't get the belly strap undone. I would have used BIGGER buckles and have them snap into the harness, not around the belly strap.
2. the hydraytion bags don't have tubes so you have to unzip the bag to get them out. The plastic is much stiffer, cheaper and will shatter if you put them in the freezer, so going overnight in the winter is a problem. And one of them leaks so I have to return the whole thing :0<
3. The webbing no longer has a fleece 'sleeve' - it's just webbing so there's no protection.

Bottom line, they seemed to be cutting corners to save money. The cost of the pack is about the same as 3 years ago, but the quality is not. Disappointing as I pay top dollar for great quality and feel like I didn't get it. Still a great backpack but wish they hadn't tried to "improve" a design that worked well (except for the velco that kept pulling my dogs hair out when I fastened it!).

very pleased with purchase

This backpack has worked out perfectly. I got a medium for our german shepherd and it fits fine. It only took two days for him to get used to putting the harness on. The packs are just the right size for him to carry water, a fold up bowl and our sweatshirts etc. As long as the weight is equally distributed between the two sides it stays on him straight while he runs around. It is very well made and looks great.

Great pack...!!! Easy to use.. Carries a lot... And, the Dog Likes It..

I recently wrote this review for another site.. I'll post it here as it may help someone to make a more informed buying decision.. I purchased this pack from Ruffwear several years back before I was aware that Amazon carried them..

Look at the Palisades pack as a 2-piece assembly.. Mine is sized for a MEDIUM DOG..

There is the harness part that is best strapped on and fitted first by itself.. Mine had movable pads built around the two belly straps. The chest "Y-assembly" is also padded where the three straps meet. The harness also has a heavy-duty attachment ring located above the spine just behind the withers area. This ring is normally used to attach a leash. We use a horse lead about 8'-10' long when in populated areas.. This attachment is probably strong enuf and located correctly to actually lift the animal into the air or up or down a steep rock face.. Just forward of the attachment ring is a strong sewn-in handle of the same strong material as the harness.. This could easily be used to lift the animal by the harness when the pack portion is removed. The underside of the harness is lightly padded and doesn't seem to rub the skin/fur wrong. It would be easy to attach another pad, similar to a saddle blanket under the harness. The entire harness assembly is quite sturdy. I would suspect that properly fitted it would remain serviceable for a long period of time. The stitching is exceptionally strong, as are the straps that are quite long but the loose ends fold up into the harness areas.

The second part of this rig is the actual pack portion itself.. It has a very simple throw-over-the-back pack that is similar to saddlebags for a horse..Read more ›

Awesome Pack!

This pack is easy to put on and off, the pockets are spacious, and it is a great product to put a big active dog to work. I am no longer struggling to control my 2 hug dobermans and it is awesome to go on a long walk and have some water to give them. This particular pack comes with two 4-6 cup water bags that I refrigerate and stick into the packs to keep the dogs cool. I use the packs every morning for a 2-3 mile walk and both dogs are comfortable and do not experience any chaffing. I can't wait to take them out on a hike!

Great Pack (Sizing info inside)

Ok, I just got this pack today and as such, I have not put it through a trial. From first impressions, I'll start it at 5 stars and update over time, if needed. I can't add much to what the other reviewers said but I will reiterate that the bag is made with excellent quality. The water bladders seem fragile (made of thin, hard plastic) but my decision to purchase this bag was made before I even knew it came with them.

What I wanted to add was regarding the sizing. I will post some pics but the pack does run on the "large" side. That is, if you have a medium-sized dog, you will likely need the small size. I have a 2 year-old male Border Collie who runs a bit on the small side (about 40 lbs). His girth (chest measurement at the widest part, just below the front legs) came in at about 25"-26". I first tried the medium-sized pack because, well, he's a medium-sized dog (and I hadn't yet measured his chest) but it turned out to be too big. According to the sizing information, the medium sized pack is designed for dogs with a 27"+ chest girth. I would guess you could go up to 29" or 30" with a small size. The Ruffwear website recommends that if you are "borderline" (on any of the sizes), go with the smaller pack. Seriously, 27" would be the absolute minimum requirement for the medium sized pack and you will likely have it at the absolute minimum strap-lengths. With the small, there is PLENTY of adjustment upwards but with the medium, you're stuck.. So, if your dog is any less than 28 or 29 inches of chest girth, go for the small.
